Spigen Pixel 2 Slim Armor Wallet Case review: A good alternative to traditional wallet cases

I hope you like thick phones.

Wallet cases have been around for years as a way to abandon your standalone wallet and merge it into your phone. It's a novel idea and one that appeals to a lot of people, but most wallet cases are often too awkward to use in day-to-day use thanks to their fold-out designs that get in the way more often than not.

Thankfully, Spigen's got an accessory that it thinks can be a better alternative to these traditional options.

The Spigen Slim Armor Wallet Case for the Pixel 2 tries combining the best bits of a rugged and wallet case into one product, and while it's a great idea, it may not be for everyone. Let's take a closer look.

Spigen Pixel 2 Slim Armor Wallet Case

Price: $17.99

Bottom line: If you don't like traditional wallet cases, Spigen's option might be worth a look (so long as you don't mind a lot of extra bulk).

The Good

  • Offers great protection
  • Discrete holding area for your cards
  • Buttons still feel good to press

The Bad

  • Adds a lot of bulk
  • Can only hold two cards
  • Sliding door feels flimsy
  • Scratches far too easily

Spigen Pixel 2 Slim Armor Wallet Case What I like

Even if the execution of the finer details may not be the best (more on that later), I love what Spigen's going for with this case.

At first glance, it looks like any regular rugged case. The first section of the dual-layer design is made up of a shock-absorbent TPU material that your Pixel 2 is encased in. This layer hugs the Pixel 2 like a glove and allows for Spigen's excellent Air Cushion Technology to protect against nasty drops.

This form factor is my favorite solution for wallet cases.

Along with that, there's another hard plastic layer over this that offers even more protection and houses the wallet portion of the case.

From a durability standpoint, Spigen did a great job with this one. All of the phone is enclosed in maximum protection, there's a lip that comes over the display to guard against scratches, and the rugged cutouts for the power and volume buttons feel fantastic.

When it comes time to pull out your card, simply slide the back portion of the case down and you've got easy access to all your plastic. There's a rubber bottom to keep your cards safe while being stowed away and pulling them out of the case is much easier than I was anticipating.

Hope you don't carry a lot of plastic

Spigen Pixel 2 Slim Armor Wallet Case What I don't like

The idea of combining a wallet section into the form factor of a regular case is a great concept, but here, not everything works out as well as I would have liked.

For starters, the actual wallet portion could use some work. You can only really fit two cards in the case at a time, and for most people, I'm assuming you've got more than two cards you like to carry with you at all times. I was able to cram three cards in the case at once, but at this point, the sliding door tends to get hung up and become more difficult to use.

Speaking of that door, I don't have a lot of hope for how well it'll hold up over a few months of solid use. It opens and closes without any issues, but it feels extremely flimsy and like it could pop off at any given moment. On a related note, I noticed numerous scratches all over the hard plastic after lying it on a table to grab photos for this review. For a case that's nearly $20, I'd expect greater cosmetic durability.

Lastly, this is probably one of the thickest cases I've ever used. I understand there's no real way to get around that considering the two-in-one design, but it makes the Pixel 2 comically thick. It's still manageable to use in one or two hands, but it certainly won't win any awards for its looks and comes with an awkwardly large opening for the fingerprint sensor.

Spigen Pixel 2 Slim Armor Wallet Case

The idea of replacing my wallet with a phone case is one I've considered a number of times, but having a case that I need to flip open to use my phone doesn't appeal to me in the slightest.

Spigen squashes that issue with its Slim Armor Wallet Case, and in my opinion, this form factor is better than what we've been used to with flip-open designs for so many years.

A lot was done right with this case between the excellent protection and discrete holding area for your cards, but it's unfortunately let down by a bulky design and wallet section that needs some more time on the drawing board.

3 out of 5

With that said, if you've been looking for a Pixel 2 wallet case and haven't been impressed with what you've found so far, Spigen's case is still worth your consideration.

What's new on Amazon Prime Video for August 2018

Bring on Jack Ryan, a Gringo, and more!

Finally, August is upon us. (Same time every year, but whatever. It's been a long one.) And we're particularly interested in this particular August for Amazon Prime Video for the following reason: Jack Ryan.

OK, we have to wail until the end of the month (because of course we do) to finally get our first taste of John Krasinski in the latest incarnation of the classic Tom Clancy character. And we have got to believe it'll be worth the wait.

What else is coming up in August? A whole lot of excellent Amazon originals. Check it out.

  • Agatha Christie S1: The Prime Original 3-episode limited series is based on the novel of the same name and follows the Argyll family after a man claims that the black sheep of the family, Jack Argyll, didn't murder its tyrannical matriarch. The family must come to terms with Jack's innocence and the fact that one of them may be the real murderer. Agatha Christie will be available in HDR and UHD on compatible HDR devices. (Aug. 10)
  • All or Nothing: Manchester City S1: The Prime Original series follows the team's legendary coach, Pep Guardiola and the stories that unfold within the players' lives. All or Nothing: Manchester City will be available in HDR and UHD on compatible HDR devices.
  • The Stinky & Dirty Show, S2B: The Prime Original series is based on books by Jim and Kate McMullan with original music from Dan Bern and featuring celebrity voices like Mark Hamill (Spacey), Jane Lynch, Andy Richter, Joan Cusack and Wallace Shawn. In season 2b, test friends Stinky and Dirty are back lending a helping wheel to their vehicle friends in Go City. They go on new adventures like building a rollercoaster and meet new friends like Spacey, the super spaceship. (Aug. 14)
  • Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan S1: The Prime Original series starring John Krasinski is a modern reinvention of the famed and lauded Tom Clancy hero. It centers on Jack Ryan, a CIA analyst who is thrust into his first dangerous field assignment and uncovers a terrorist communication pattern in which he's faced with a new breed of global threatening terrorism. Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan will be available in HDR and UHD on compatible HDR devices. (Aug. 31)
  • Gringo: The Prime Original movie starring David Oyelowo, Charlize Theron, and Joel Edgerton is a dark comedy mixed with white-knuckle action and dramatic intrigue. It explores the battle of survival for businessman Harold Soyinka when he finds himself crossing the line from law-abiding citizen to wanted criminal. Gringo will be available in HDR and UHD on compatible HDR devices. (Aug. 17)

Amazon Prime Video has is one of the go-to destinations for on-demand content, thanks in no small part to devices like the new Amazon Fire TV Cube, the $50 Amazon Fire Stick, the $70 Amazon Fire TV, and even the $229 Amazon Echo Show.

AUKEY USB-C Hub review: A travel-ready Chromebook hub that won't break the bank

This lightweight USB-C hub is a bit rough around the edges, but it gets me connected and productive with little fuss.

My Google Pixelbook makes me very, very happy almost all the time, except when I need to use it with my wired mouse and keyboard or plug in external storage to salvage media off a misbehaving SD card.

Since the Google Pixelbook only sports 2 USB-C ports, so if you want to plug in basically anything besides the power cable, you're going to need a USB-C hub. USB-C hubs are starting to become more widely available, but prices on most hubs are still a bit high if you want a name brand you trust. Thankfully, AUKEY has a USB-C hub that looks good and travels light without breaking the bank.

AUKEY USB-C Hub

Price: $38.99

Bottom line: It's a lightweight USB-C hub that packs a lot of ports into its tiny puck of a frame and looks good doing it.

The Good

  • Lightweight and easy to pack
  • Compact aluminum shell matches Pixelbook perfectly

The Bad

  • Ports are a bit stiff when plugging in
  • Super-short cable and ultralight construction lead to dangling hubs and awkward angles

See at Amazon

AUKEY USB-C Hub What I like

AUKEY has a couple configurations of USB-C Hubs available, but the model that I find strikes the best balance is the model that sports 3 USB-A ports, 1 USB-C port, an HDMI port, and microSD and SD card readers. This configuration keeps the ports on the two wider sides of the hub, leaves just enough space between ports for bulkier cables to fit alongside each other while keeping the hub the size of my NOMATIC minimal wallet.

Plugging into the USB-A ports on the AUKEY USB-C Hub is a bit on the stiff side, but that also means that flash drives and peripheral cables will plug in and stay in while you shuffle your Chromebook around your makeshift desk at Starbucks. This hub supports USB-PD (Power Delivery), meaning that it supports fast charging for the Google Pixelbook, Apple MacBook, and any future USB-PD Chromebooks or Android phones that come in the future, and the hub doesn't heat up even when using these quicker charging profiles.

AUKEY USB-C Hub What I don't like

The hub connects to your Chromebook/MacBook/USB-C phone via a 5.9" cable, and while built-in cables like these are the norm, especially for travel-oriented hubs like the AUKEY, that super-short cable means that your hub doesn't have a lot a maneuverability. Often the hub just dangles off the side of my Pixelbook when I use it in tent mode or off the side of the plastic shoebox that doubles as my laptop stand.

The lightness of the AUKEY hub means that it dangling off the side doesn't really help matters, either, as the two rubberized strips on the bottom of the hub don't have enough weight pushing down on them for it to keep a grip on anything. Lightweight hubs are better for travel, but that also means they tend to travel across your desk when you're using them.

I also know that while there isn't any free space on this hub, I do wish it had a 3.5mm port so that I could plug my desktop speakers into it while I'm plugging in my mouse and keyboard. This would especially be nice if you're using the hub with a USB-C phone that has abandoned its headphone jack — and yes, I have used the AUKEY hub with my phones. So long as you use an app that will allow 360 screen rotation, the experience is actually really nice.

AUKEY USB-C Hub Should you buy it?

The AUKEY USB-C Hub has served me well over the last six months. I can slip it in my daypack without it feeling like dead weight in my bag, the ports are stiff but hold onto their cables really good, which is great because the hub itself can't hold on to solid ground. I seldom run out of USB ports, and while I may use SD cards more often than the average user in the age of Google Photos, I'm happy to have it built-in.

3.5 out of 5

At almost $40, the AUKEY hub seems expensive — at least until you look at what other name-brand hubs cost — but it earns its keep quickly and since USB-C is the future, you'll probably be able to use this hub for years and years to come.

Fortnite for Android: Everything You Need to Know!

The hottest game of 2018 will be coming to Android soon.

Fortnite has been blowing up lately. Millions of people have become obsessed with the game, both as players and just watching popular Twitch streamers play the game.

Interested to learn more about what the heck Fortnite is all about? Just keep reading.

What's new with Fortnite?

July 30, 2018 — Fortnite for Android might not be on the Play Store and require a manual APK download

Just a few days after it was reported that Fortnite will be launching as a limited exclusive for the Galaxy Note 9, we now have some interesting details about how the Android app will be distributed.

The folks at XDA recently took a look at the source code on Epic's official website, and while doing so, came across some instructions telling people how to download the Android port. Specifically, it talks about going to Epic's site and downloading the game's APK file there rathern thand doing so through Google Play.

With a move like this, there are a few important things to point out.

First off, while manually downloading APK files isn't all that difficult, it does require you to accept downloads from unknown sources (possibly making yourself vulnerable to security threats) and can be a clunky process for users that aren't familiar with doing so. On the flip side, Epic gets to avoid Google's 30% cut of all in-game purchases.

It's still unclear if this process will be set in stone for the game's foreseeable future or just during its exclusivity to the Note 9, but all these details should be explained in just a few short days.

July 16, 2018 — Season 5 Battle Pass has begun, still no official Android launch date set

We're midway through July and still no word from Epic Games as to when specifically Fortnite will be released for Android this summer.

Meanwhile, the Season 5 Battle Pass has begun for all other platforms that Fortnite is available on, which either means that the Android version is imminent or we're going to have to wait for this season to wrap up and hope it's released ahead of Season 6. Battle Pass seasons typically last around 10 weeks, which would mean Season 5 should wrap up around the third week of September which lines up nicely with the Autumnal equinox and the official end of summer.

Speculation on the Fortnite forums is rampant, with some posters confident the Android version will be released imminently in the coming weeks, while others are prepared to wait until September. We'll be sure to let you know as soon as a more concrete date is set.

All the big details

What is Fortnite?

Fortnite is what would happen if you combined two of the most addictive games out there — Minecraft and PUBG.

Fortnite offers a free 100-player Player Vs Player (PvP) Battle Royale game mode. Just like PUBG, you're dropped onto the large island map and must arm yourself and outlive your competition. But in Fortnite, you always start out armed with a pickaxe which can be used as a melee weapon or for harvest raw supplies for building walls, ramps, and shelters.

It certainly adds extra layers of strategy to the format, creating essentially a perfect storm of addictive gaming action that's as fun to watch as it is to play. Oh, speaking of storms all the action takes place in the eye of a deadly electrical storm meaning you can't just hunker down and hide out the whole game. You got to keep moving.

How do you play the game?

Just like PUBG, your goal is to be the last man standing — with up to 100 players involved in each match, that's no small task.

Each game starts with the players jumping out of the flying "Battle Bus" and parachuting down onto a giant island. Once landed, you must loot nearby buildings for items, guns, and ammo to defend yourself and attack other players.

You also need to keep an eye on the map, as every few minutes the storm closes in on the play area. If you're caught in the storm, you slowly die so you do not want to forget to regularly check where you are on the map. Eventually, the play constricts to a tiny area for the final showdown between the remaining players — there can only be one winner!

Unlike PUBG, you're able to carry more than two guns. Instead, you're limited to the number of weapons and items you can carry at one time. Also, guns are color coded to denote their rarity — from grey (common) to orange (legendary) — and the rarer the gun, the deadlier it is.

Then there's the crafting element. Every player starts out with a pickaxe which can be used as a melee weapon or used to break down trees and buildings to harvest the raw resources. You can then use these raw resources to build your own structures, whether it be a defensive wall to provide cover from an advancing enemy, a set of stairs to reach the second floor of a building or your own watchtower to snipe players from across the map. The resources you mine will determine the strength. Steel is stronger than brick, which is stronger than wood.

The latest update to the game for the Season 5 Battle Pass has introduced a slew of new map areas and gameplay features including the All-Terrain Kart (ATK) which let you and your squad move around the map faster than ever before. You can read more about the latest tweaks in the full release notes.

When will it be available for Android?

Fortnite has been available for PC, Xbox One and PlayStation 4 for a few months now, and is now widely available on iOS devices after a brief invite-only beta.

There have been no firm dates set for an Android release by Fortnite's developer, Epic Games, but they have said to expect Fortnite Mobile to launch on Android sometime this summer. For now, Android users can head on over to Epic Games, log in or create your Fortnite Account, and then let the developers know which device you plan to play on which will also add you to the mailing list to be informed when the game eventually drops.

Until then, at least we've got PUBG to tide us over.

Yeah, but I found this site that offered an APK file for...

Stop. The game is not out for Android yet, so any website you see offering a version of Fortnite for Android is a scam.

Since Epic Games announced the Summer release window for Fortnite on Android, a bunch of fake websites have popped up claiming to offer an early version of the APK. I'm not going to link to them but unless you see an announcement from Epic Games themselves or we report it here, don't fall for the scam.

If you want to be notified from the developers as soon as the game is available, you can sign up at the Fortnite Mobile website.

Will it be free to play?

Epic Games has so far released the PvP Battle Royale game for free across all platforms including the mobile version for iOS. The console version also has a paid game mode called Save The World that's Player vs Environment (PvE). Save The World plays more like Minecraft, where you're harvesting more resources and stocking up on loot to survive waves of AI enemies in a sort of tower defense-style of gameplay.

The PvE mode will not be available in Fortnite Mobile due to CPU limitations and, frankly, it's the PvP mode that everyone is crazy for so that's quite alright with us.

However, the mobile version will offers in-app purchases for cosmetic items to customize your player and people sure have been buying stuff. According to this report from Sensor Tower analtyics, Fortnite Mobile players spent more than $1 million during the first 72 hours of its release on iOS. Wow.

So, to answer the question, you have the option to spend money on Fortnite if you want a cool looking character, but the game is free to play and you won't need to pay to win.

Will there be support for Bluetooth controls?

Epic Games has indicated that Bluetooth controller support will be coming later, but as of right now only touchscreen controls are available.

Is it cross-platform?

Epic Games have indicated that you will be able to play Fortnite across all platforms. Your Fortnite profile can be connected to all the platforms you play on so you can add to your stats however you connect to the game.

Don't be worried about getting mismatched as the one mobile player in a server of PC and console players. If you're playing solo on mobile, you will only be matched up against other mobile players. If you join a squad with friends playing on another platform, then that squad will be matched against a multi-platform population, essentially making cross-platform play opt-in.

Are you hyped for Fortnite?

We'll be sure to let you know when the game launches for Android. Until then, you can create your Epic Games account and start playing on one of the other platforms to start getting a handle on the game

As a matter of fact, contactless cards make up 55 percent of the market share globally. While contactless transactions are projected to reach $2 trillion by 2020, $300 billion of that total will be accomplished through ...

Mystery Xiaomi phone seen on regulatory website in China could be the Mi Note 4 with transparent back

The Xiaomi Mi Note 4 might have made an appearance a few days ago on the the website of Chinese telecom regulator TENAA. These images reveal that at least one variant of the device will sport a transparent back cover, similar to the Xiaomi Mi 8 Explorer Edition. As we told you earlier today, the "mainboard" that appears through the transparent cover on the Mi 8 Explorer Edition is not the real board that is used to power the phone.

Wait until later to activate the device, and you'll pay $399.99 for a savings of $100, or 25%.

With the BlackBerry KEY2 launched in the states earlier this month, retailers are looking to clear their inventory of the KEYone. And while there are certainly reasons to buy the KEY2 instead (dual ...

Samsung's Q2 results are in: weak Galaxy S9 sales contribute to 4% revenue decline

Samsung Galaxy S9 and S9+

However, on a slightly more positive note, the company’s operating profit actually rose 6 percent versus last year to $13.28 billion.

Breaking these figures down, the company notes that the increase in profit can be largely attributed to its semiconductor business, ...

After being released by MetroPCS, Cricket Wireless, and T-Mobile, the LG Stylo 4 can now be purchased unlocked in the US. Known in other countries as LG Q Stylus, the Stylo 4 is LG's first stylus-equipped phone to sport a modern FullVision, 18:9 display - a 6.2-inch panel with rounded corners and 1080 x 2160 pixels.

Priced at $299, the unlocked Stylo 4 is currently in stock only at B&H - one of LG's official retail partners. LG says the handset is compatible with all four big US carriers: Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile, and Sprint. The smartphone likely works on other ...

Analyst says the number of iPhone units sold in a quarter is not as important as the Average Selling Price

Wall Street is all strapped in and ready to buy or sell Apple's shares in bunches. Tomorrow, after the market closes, the company will report its fiscal third quarter earnings. Traditionally, this is the weakest period of the year for sales of Apple's smartphone since most consumers are awaiting the new models to be unveiled in September. As we noted the other day, the consensus of 17 Wall Street and independent analysts is that Apple will report sales of 42.05 million units during the period from April through June. That would represent a small 2.4% year-over-year gain.

Top-of-the-line Xiaomi Mi 8 Explorer Edition debuts in China, sells out in seconds

The top-of-the-line Xiaomi Mi 8 Explorer Edition has a transparent back that seemingly allows you to see the phone's "mainboard" through the back panel (see the image at the top of this story). When questioned at the time, the company said that the board is real and is not just a sticker strategically placed to trick your eyes. But Xiaomi was asked the wrong question, because while the board is real, it is not the one actually used to drive the handset. What you are looking at through the transparent rear panel is a secondary board that doesn't connect to anything, doesn't do anything, and ...

No Android 8.1 for OnePlus 3 and 3T, Android P update will be delivered instead

OnePlus has come a long way since bitterly disappointing its early fans by releasing a grand total of one major software update for 2015’s mid-range X and high-end OP2. The company’s impressively affordable premium phones will still exhibit the occasional bug after receiving various small tweaks and feature add-ons, but all in all, these have become some of the world’s best supported Android handsets.

That includes not just this year’s OnePlus 6 and 2017’s 5T and 5, but the OnePlus 3 and 3T as well, the former of which is already more than 24 months old. The Snapdragon 820 and 821-powered ...

The ZenFone Max Pro M1 recently popped in Spain where customers will soon be able to pre-order one for €250. Apparently, the smartphone will hit shelves on August 13, so about two weeks from now. Unfortunately, we don't have information about its availability in other European ...

OUKITEL WP2 Coming Soon With 10,000mAh Battery: Video

OUKITEL is planning to announce a new rugged smartphone, the OUKITEL WP2. The company says that the OUKITEL WP2 will basically be an upgrade to its K10000 Max handset which was announced a while ago, and it will feature that same 10,000mAh battery which was included in the K10000 Max, which is, needless to say, huge, and it will deliver great battery life no matter how you use your device on a daily basis.

The OUKITEL WP2 will also come with IP68 certification for water and dust resistance, while the phone will also be shock-proof. OUKITEL also mentions that the WP2 will sport Corning’s Gorilla Glass protection on top of the display, though we do not know what version exactly. The device will also be well-protected against drops and ‘everyday use’, while the company also released a promo video for the upcoming device. In the video that is embedded down below, the company proves that the phone is dust and water-proof by dropping both dust and water on it, while the company does the same for shock-proofing. It’s a very short video, but it also reveals the design of the OUKITEL WP2, even though we do not know how much will the phone cost just yet, nor what specs should we expect.

Based on the provided video, the OUKITEL WP2 will resemble some other OUKITEL-branded devices, and by looking at it, you can notice that it’s a rugged handset. The device will sport two cameras on the back, while it will be made mainly out of metal. OUKITEL’s branding will be present on both the back and front side of the phone, while the device will utilize on-screen buttons. We’re still not sure when will this handset become available, but it’s expected to arrive in the coming weeks, OUKITEL will probably release more info soon.

YouTube’s dark theme has started gradually rolling out to Android

A dark theme option for YouTube users on Android is in the early stages of rolling out to end users, Google confirmed to TechCrunch, following a number of reports and sightings of the dark mode showing up for users in the app’s settings. The feature has taken a bit longer to launch than expected – YouTube first announced a dark mode for its mobile app back in March, when it launched on iOS. At the time, the company said the dark theme for Android was coming “soon.”

Five months later, well, here it is.

Similar to its iOS counterpart, the dark theme is toggled on or off in the Android app’s Settings. When enabled, YouTube’s usual white background switches to black throughout the YouTube app experience as your browse, search and watch videos.

The dark theme has a variety of benefits for end users. It gives watching videos a more cinematic feel, for starters. And when you’ve been staring at your screen for a long time, it can help you to better focus on the content, and not the controls. It can also help to cut down on glare, and help viewers take in the true colors of the videos they watch, the company previously explained.

Plus, some tests have shown dark themes can save battery life – something that’s particularly useful for YouTube’s 1.8 billion monthly users, who are spending more than an hour per day watching YouTube videos on mobile devices.

YouTube first introduced a dark theme in May 2017, when it debuted a series of enhancements to its desktop website, including its simpler, Material Design-inspired look. At the time, it said a dark theme for mobile was a top request.

The YouTube app isn’t alone in catering to users’ desire for a dark mode. Other high-profile apps have gone this route as well, including Twitter, Reddit, Twitter clients like Tweetbot and Twitterific, Reddit clients like Beam, Narwhal, and Apollo, podcast player Overcast, calendar app Fantastical, Telegram X, Instapaper, Pocket, Feedly and others.

Google told us that the dark theme for YouTube on Android is still in the early phases of a gradual rollout, and it will have more updates about this launch in the “coming weeks.”

The change arrives alongside update a YouTube Community Manager shared in YouTube’s Help Forum about YouTube’s adaptive video player. The player on desktop now removes the black bars alongside 4:3 and vertical videos, by adjusting the viewing area accordingly, they said.

Fabric offers an alternative to Facebook sharing with a private timeline of personal moments

Fabric, a personal journaling app that emerged from Y Combinator’s 2016 batch of startups, is relaunching itself as a Facebook alternative. The app is giving itself a makeover in the wake of Facebook’s closure of the Moves location tracker, by offering its own tool to record your activities, photos, memories and other moments shared with friends and family. But unlike on Facebook, everything in Fabric is private by default and data isn’t shared with marketers.

Instead, the startup hopes to build something users will eventually pay for, via premium features or subscriptions.

The idea for the startup came from two people who helped create Facebook’s core features.

Co-founders Arun Vijayvergiya and Nikolay Valtchanov worked for several years at the social network, where Vijayvergiya built the product that would later become Facebook Timeline at an internal hackathon. He also worked on products like Friendship Pages, Year in Review and On This Day, while Valtchanov developed integrations between Facebook and fitness applications.

After leaving Facebook, both were inspired to work on Fabric because of their interest in personal journaling – and that became the key focus for the original version of the Fabric app. But while other journaling apps may offer a blank space for recording thoughts, Fabric automates the process by pulling in photos, posts from elsewhere on social media, places you visited, and more, and put those on its map interface.

The longer-term goal is that Fabric users will be able to look back across their personal history to answer any kind of question about where they had been, what they did, and who they were with – but in a more private environment than what’s available on Facebook.

Facebook could have built something similar, but its focus has been more on how personal profile data could be useful to advertisers.

Despite numerous check-ins, posts where you tagged friends, shared photos and more, there’s still not an easy way to ask Facebook about that great Indian restaurant you tried last March, or who was on that group beach trip with you a few years ago, for example. At best, Facebook offers memory flashbacks through its On This Day feature (now available at any time via the Memories tab), or round-ups and collages that appear at various times throughout the year.

As a search engine for your own memories, it’s not that great.

What’s New

This is where Fabric comes in. It will automatically record your activities, checking you in to places you visit, to which you can then choose to add friends.

While the idea of automatic location gathering may turn off a good number of users, the difference is that Fabric’s data collection is meant for your eyes only, unless you explicitly choose to share something with friends.

Fabric doesn’t use third-party software for its location system – it’s written in-house, so the data is never touched by a third-party. It also uses industry standard encryption for data transfer and storage, and login information is stored in a separate system from the rest of your data as an added precaution.

Notably, Fabric doesn’t plan to generate revenue by selling data or offering it to advertisers for targeting purposes. Instead, the company hopes users will eventually pay for its product – perhaps as a subscription or through premium upgrades. (It’s not doing this yet, however.)

“The whole motivation behind Fabric is that many meaningful parts of your life do not belong in the public sphere,” explains Vijayvergiya. “In order to be able to capture these moments, user trust is essential and is something we have baked into our company culture. Internally, we refer to ourselves as a ‘private-first’ company. Everything on Fabric is private by default. You have to choose to include friends in your moments. We don’t share any data with marketers, and we don’t intend to share personally identifiable information with advertisers,” he says.

Since its 2016 release, Fabric has been downloaded 70,000 times by users across 117 countries, and has seen 112 million automatic check-ins.

The new version of the app has been redesigned to be something users engage with more often, as opposed to the more passive journaling app it was before.

The app now offers an outline of your activities, which it also calls Timeline. Here, you can add people, photos and memorable anecdotes to those automated entries. You can jump back to any day to see your history with any person or place that appears on the Timeline.

You can also turn any moment into one you collaborate on with friends, by allowing others to add photos and comments. That is, instead of broad post to a group of so-called “friends” on Facebook, you share the moment with those who really matter. This isn’t all that different from how people use private messaging apps and group chats today – in order to share things with people that aren’t necessarily meant for everyone to see.

In addition, Fabric allows you to add your friends to the app, so you can be automatically tagged when you both spend time together in the real world. This also simplifies sharing because you won’t have to think about which posts should be shared with which audience.

For instance, Vijayvergiya says, “this means you can add your mom as a friend, and only share with her the moments you spend together in the same place.”

The most compelling feature in the updated app may not be check-ins or sharing, but search.

In Fabric, you can now search for past events in your life similar to how you search the web. That is, you could type in “restaurant rome 2017” or “camila los angeles birthday” and find the matching posts, Vijayvergiya suggests. And because you can import your Facebook, Instagram, and Camera Roll to Fabric, it’s now offering the search engine that Facebook itself forgot to build. (You can import your Facebook Moves history, too, ahead of its shutdown.)

Fabric’s search will also be available on the desktop web, where it’s currently in beta.

Fabric’s real challenger, as it turns out, may not be Facebook, though. It’s Google Photos.

Because of advances in image recognition technology, Google Photos (and some other photo apps) have built advanced search capabilities that let you pull up not places, things, people, and more, using data recognized in the image itself. Users can also share those photos with others, collaborate on albums, and leave notes as comments.

The difference is that Fabric offers import from a variety of sources and encourages journaling. But that may not be enough to attract a large user base, especially when automatic check-ins rely on the app’s use of background location which has some impact on battery life.

Fabric is a free download on iOS.

AMC TV now has its own Android TV app

We talk a lot about cord-cutting — "skinny bundles" and the like — but there are still plenty of cable holdouts. Cable boxes are largely terrible, though, so any opportunity to not use them is a boon. To that end, AMC has just released an Android TV app.

AMC has had an Android app for years, but this one is specifically for Android TV. The app requires a cable provider login and provides ad-supported full episodes of AMC's hits like "The Walking Dead," "Preacher," and, er, the other "Walking Dead." There's also a movies tab (if you'll recall, AMC stands for "American Movie Classics") and the option to watch live programming. If you want to pay an extra five bucks a month, you can get AMC Premiere, which unlocks additional content and removes most ads.

WhatsApp group audio and video calls are now rolling out to everyone

After leaks and teardown revelations aplenty, WhatsApp group calls were finally formally revealed at Facebook's F8 developer conference in early May. By the end of the month, the feature had started showing up for some. Now, WhatsApp has announced that group audio and video calls are rolling out to all users.

The functionality is pretty straightforward: you and up to three other users can all talk to each other at once, with or without accompanying split-screen video.

The carrier will pay Nokia $3.5 billion for "its complete end-to-end 5G technology, software and services portfolio." Nokia will help bring 5G to T-Mobile's 28 GHz millimeter wave and its 600 MHz spectrum.

Google fires shots at Microsoft and Apple with new Chromebook ad

Google has made countless advertisements for Chromebooks, but none of them have directly pointed out flaws in traditional operating systems like Windows and macOS - until now. The company just released a new Chromebook commercial that calls out its competitors for being annoying, buggy, and slow.

The end of the ad highlights numerous applications available for Chromebooks, including Lightroom CC, Google Docs, Hangouts, Netflix, Spotify, Slack, and others. The final shot shows the Pixelbook running PUBG Mobile in laptop mode, even though that game doesn't really support keyboard input.

Asus ZenFone 5Z up for pre-order now, arrives August 6

Asus announced the ZenFone 5Z all the way back in February. It's very much a 2018 Android device: it's got a Snapdragon 845, six or eight gigs of RAM, two cameras, and of course, that notch. Months later, the 5Z is now available for pre-order. You can reserve one now for the low price of $499.99.

The company touts the 5Z's display notch as being "26 percent smaller" than the iPhone X's, although that's not particularly impressive.

LG is charging $1,800 for a special edition V35, and it's only making 300 of them

LG has a treat for its most devoted Korean fans: a special edition V35 ThinQ that costs a totally reasonable $1,800 (or 1,999,800 won). That premium gets buyers a ceramic back, a nice pair of Bluetooth headphones, and exclusivity — there will only be 300 of the device made.

Nowhere does LG refer to the new phone as a V35 — the company just calls it an LG Signature Edition device — but it walks and quacks like one; it has the same design, the same 16-megapixel cameras, the same Snapdragon 845, et cetera.

Epic Games may distribute Fortnite for Android on its website rather than the Play Store

Fortnite is supposed to come to Android this summer, but developer Epic Games hasn't offered any firm timeline yet. A recent report suggested that Fortnite would launch as an exclusive on the Samsung Galaxy Note9, and that may not be the developer's only trick. The game may never come to the Play Store at all. Instead, everyone would need to download it from the Epic Games website.

Instructions to download and install Fortnite Mobile on Android are hidden in the code on Epic Games' website.
