Huawei Mate 10 Pro reportedly receiving Android Pie in Europe

The front of the Huawei Mate 10 Pro.

  • Huawei is reportedly rolling out the Android Pie-based EMUI 9.0 update to the Mate 10 Pro.
  • The new Huawei update is apparently restricted to European users for now.
  • Prominent EMUI additions include a fingerprint-enabled password manager and GPU Turbo 2.0.

Huawei isn’t the fastest when it comes to system updates, but it looks like the company is stepping up with Android Pie. According to GetDroidTips, the Chinese colossus has pushed out a Pie-based update to the Mate 10 Pro.

The update is bundled with the EMUI 9.0 Android skin and has the build number 9.0.0.108, the website claims. The OTA is reportedly being pushed out to Mate 10 Pro users in Europe, but will “soon” spread to other markets.

EMUI 9.0 packs plenty of features, such as the Google Lens-inspired HiVision feature, GPU Turbo 2.0 for better performance in selected games, and a biometric-enabled password manager (seen below). The Chinese brand is also touting faster app launch speeds and smoother system performance with the new skin.

Huawei password vault details from a slide.

Android Pie should also bring a few new features to the Mate 10 Pro, such as digital wellbeing, wind down functionality, Google’s take on gesture navigation, and adaptive brightness. It’s unclear whether Huawei will adopt Pie’s adaptive battery feature, as EMUI already has its own power-saving features.

Editor's Pick

News of a European roll-out means other regions can’t be far behind, so sit tight if you’ve got a Mate 10 Pro in the U.S. or elsewhere. Hopefully the P20 series and budget Huawei phones aren’t far behind in receiving a Pie-based update, either.

We’ve contacted Huawei for confirmation of the OTA and will update the article when/if we get a response. Have you received the update though? Then let us know in the comments!

California Governor Jerry Brown signs net neutrality into law; Trump administration sues

With a swipe of his pen, California Governor Jerry Brown made net neutrality the law in California. That means that ISPs and wireless carriers must treat all streams of content the same. For example, Netflix can't pay AT&T money to have its content sent through a "fast lane." In addition, no content can be banned just because it conflicts with the philosophical leanings of a wireless provider. California's law also adds something that the original net neutrality rules didn't have; it prevents content streamers from paying to have its music or video streamed with a zero-rating.

New York City's Wi-Fi kiosks have over 5 million users

Back in 2014, we told you about New York City's plans to get rid of 10,000 pay phones that were still dotting the Big Apple's landscape. The plan was to replace the pay phones with  Wi-Fi kiosks that would offer free Wi-Fi at speeds up to 1Gbps, and include charging stations and an Android tablet. And ads would be sold to help fund the project, eventually making it self-sufficient.

Nearly four years later, there are 1,700 kiosks in the five boroughs, and more than five million people are registered to access the free Wi-Fi connectivity, with 20 million Wi-Fi sessions ...

Get a JBL Link View for $200 at a bunch of retailers

If you want a smart display in your life, JBL has a deal for you.

Smart displays powered by Google Assistant haven't been here for long, and the JBL Link View has been on the market for less than two months, but that hasn't stopped JBL and several other retailers from marking it down $50 to $199.95.

This smart display features an 8-inch touchscreen, stereo front-facing speakers with JBL's excellent sound, and IPX4 splash resistance, so you don't have to worry about keeping it on your kitchen counters near the sink, and spill-able, splash-able ingredients. Like the Lenovo Smart Display, the Link View has a Privacy Switch to shutter the camera and mute the mic, and it has the best sound we've heard from a smart display yet. If you've been wanting to see what a smart display can do in your home — which is a lot — now is a pretty good time to give it a try. Google might be unveiling their own smart display at their Google Pixel 3 event in the next couple of weeks, but the JBL will probably sound better than the hinted Google Home Hub.

You can find the JBL View for $200 at the following retailers:

In Moscow, professional place-holders take a beating with the launch of the new Apple iPhone models

On Friday, the Apple iPhone XS and Apple iPhone XS Max launched in Moscow at a local phone store. For several days before the launch, a few hundred Russians stood in line, getting soaked by rain and experiencing bone-chilling cold. Finally, the time came to open the doors and let the frenzied crowd in to buy the latest smartphones from Apple. But when the doors opened, most on line never entered the store.

Instead, it turns out that the queue was made up of professional place-holders, looking to sell their spots on line to the real Apple fans for a huge sum of money. ...

Target a six-figure salary with CAPM certification training

CAPM Project Management

Project management is a vital role in many industries, especially the tech world. Building software or a smartphone is complex work requiring many people. Someone needs to ensure it runs smoothly.

For this reason project managers regularly command salaries around the $100,000 mark. The best part is that you don’t need a college degree to start either, you just need a good certification.

There are a few different routes you can take to certification, and the Certified Associate in Project Management is one of best recognized globally. If you want to go from being a total beginner to ready to ace the CAPM certification exam, you only need to spend $19. That’s the cost of the Project Management (CAPM) Certification Training Bundle this week.

The 2nd gen Amazon Echo Dot is just $30 today

Historically, the best direct discount ever.

Right now you can get one for just $29.99 in Black or White. That's a price we haven't seen since Prime Day in mid-July.

For the past couple months, the best deals we've seen on the 2nd-generation Echo Dot have generally been in bundle deals... like getting bundled with a smart video doorbell or the Kids Edition that comes with a FreeTime Unlimited subscription. Getting a direct discount is not quite as common. Even during Amazon's big hardware sale in August, the Echo Dot didn't drop this low.

This hands-free, voice-controlled device uses Alexa to do all sorts of stuff. Play music, control smart home devices, make phone calls, read the news, check the weather, hear audiobooks, set timers and alarms, and oh yeah....shop on Amazon. These things are seriously handy. I find myself asking for weather updates when deciding what to wear, and playing music through my Echo Dot to keep my phone battery full. You'll surely find tons of uses for yours, too. Another great feature is that these are updated through the cloud, so everything happens in the background.

Smart speakers found in 24% of U.S. homes says new survey

The immediate future could be bright for smart speaker manufacturers following a report from Nielsen revealing that 24% of U.S. homes own a smart speaker (up from 22% in Q1). And 40% of those homes equipped with a smart speaker have multiple units inside. That leaves plenty of potential smart speaker buyers in the U.S., and will probably result in a strong holiday shopping season this year. Because smart speakers can be found priced as low as $25, they make an appropriately priced holiday gift.

Another positive stat for companies like Amazon, Google and Apple to consider, ...

Deal: Buy the Huawei Mate 10 Pro for $499.99 at B&H ($300 off)

Just a couple of weeks before the unveiling of the Mate 20 and Mate 20 Pro, retailer B&H Photo Video has lowered the price of last year’s Mate 10 Pro down to the same all-time low seen a couple of times before.

This means that those interested in Huawei’s 2017 flagship can acquire the device for just $499.99 in the US, although they’ll have to make do with the Mocha brown color. If Midnight Blue is the preferred option, consumers will be forced to spend an extra $44.99. In either case, the deal represents a significant reduction over the usual sticker price of $799.99. However, this ...

Stock up on TP-Link's Kasa mini smart plugs for $20 each

Make everything a little smarter.

The TP-Link smart plug mini is down to $19.99 on Amazon, which is a match of its lowest price. It tends to fluctuate a bunch, but seems to bound between like $27 and $30, with the last time it hit this low being back at Black Friday time.

Unlike most other smart plugs on the market right now, this one only covers up a single outlet, meaning you can stack two of them in the same receptacle, or use just one with another plug. The free Kasa iOS and Android apps allow you to control the status of the plug from anywhere, and you can also use a voice assistant, like Alexa on the Echo Dot (down to its lowest price today) to turn it on or off. It can be scheduled and has an away mode to turn devices on and off at random times so it appears as though you're home.

If you've been looking for some extra smart plugs for the house, or want to try one out for the first time, this is one of the best options available.

Weekend poll: Do you subscribe to YouTube Premium?

Almost everyone watches YouTube — if not regularly, at least occasionally. The service is a functional monopoly when it comes to online video. It's also ad-supported, and while those advertisements aren't anywhere near as annoying or ridiculous as contemporary television, they are a noticeable part of using YouTube. With benefits like offline use, background playback, YouTube Music, and no advertisements, I'm curious how many of our readers have elected to pay for YouTube Premium.

Deal: Amazon Discounts ecobee4 Smart Thermostat To $209 – September 2018

Amazon has discounted the ecobee4 Smart Thermostat today, bringing the price down to just $209. That is good for $40 off of its regular price and that also brings it back down to its all-time lowest price – something that hasn’t been seen for a few months now.

The ecobee4 is the latest smart thermostat from the company, and it also includes Alexa built-in. While its earlier models – like the very popular ecobee3 – had Alexa compatibility, the ecobee4 actually has Alexa built-in, so it could replace your Echo device. It means that you can also ask your thermostat to turn on the lights in your home, or how the weather is today and then have the thermostat adjust the temperature before you leave for work. It’s a pretty neat feature, but the ecobee4 will also work to save you money on heating and cooling your home. The ecobee4 will adjust the temperature of your home, so it stays the same temperature and it’s not too hot or too cold. This is going to allow you to conserve energy and spend less each month on your energy bill. The ecobee4 does come with one sensor (though you can buy more) which allows the thermostat to know the temperature in other rooms – this is particularly useful if you have a larger home.

This item is also eligible for Amazon Prime’s free shipping. Which includes free two-day shipping, and pretty cheap (usually $3.99) next-day shipping if you need it extra fast. If you are not an Amazon Prime member yet, you can sign up for a free trial of Amazon Prime. You’ll get 30 days free (if you’re a student, you get 6 months), and then it’s $119/year (or $59/year for students). Prime members do get a whole lot more than just free shipping though, so be sure to check out the full benefits.

The world's first 10GB of RAM phone may not be coming after all

Currently, 8GB is the most amount of RAM that can be found within a smartphone, putting the relatively small devices on par with certain laptops. But recently, a new variant of the Oppo Find X with a whopping 10GB of RAM was certified in China.

This certification suggested Oppo’s device would become the first commercially available smartphone to ship with 10GB of RAM. However, according to reliable tipster Ice Universe, the new model, which was also set to include 256GB of internal storage, will not be released.

Presently, it remains unclear why Oppo has gone to the effort ...

Most useless software features in Samsung's past smartphones

Ah yes, the Samsung Galaxy Note 9 has been making the rounds of late, showing to us all why it’s going to be one of the smartphones to beat this upcoming holiday season. No doubt a beast in nearly every facet, the Note 9 is yet evidence in how Samsung has conformed over the years to deliver a smooth, intuitive, and rich experience with its software. Indeed, there are still quite a few tricks and features packed into the Note 9’s arsenal, but we can say with confidence that many of them are useful to the user.

Well, that wasn’t always the case for ...
