Twitter has finally shared the world’s first publicly edited tweet
For years, pretty much everyone who's used Twitter has been asking for an edit button, so we could correct embarrassing typos and backtrack on accidentally tagging the wrong people, all without deleting a tweet and starting fresh. Earlier this year, though, that pipe dream finally started to feel possible, as Twitter acknowledged it was developing an edit feature. We're still not sure when you'll have the chance to use it yourself, but the official Twitter Blue account just put out a tweet that shows editing in action.

Google is preparing to unveil the new Pixel 7 and 7 Pro on October 6, but further down the line we've got a Pixel Tablet waiting for us. Long before that even gets here, Google's been trying to show tablets a little overdue love, like the work it's been doing to optimize over 20 of the company’s apps for tablets. Following the Material You dynamic theming change, we're now seeing the Play Store on Android tablets shaping up into what we were promised back at Google I/O 2022.

Google Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro: Everything we know
It's been a big year for Google. Not only did the Pixel 6a win over our hearts, taking everything that was good about the Pixel 6 and packaging it into a mid-range phone, but the company has already teased the upcoming Pixel 7 and 7 Pro for a fall 2022 launch. That launch is now confirmed for October 6, where we'll be seeing the Pixel 7, Pixel 7 Pro, the Pixel Watch, and some new Nest devices. All three of Google's most recent smartphone launches are among the best Android devices you can buy today, and these upcoming premium models promise to offer improvements in some crucial categories.

Google Play Store picks up a handy new tab that keeps all your non-smartphone apps in one place
It used to be that the Google Play Store was just the place we would go to on our smartphones to download and update apps. Since then, though, things have changed a lot. Google tried to diversify the Play brand into movies, music, and more. It's an effort that largely failed, but the app store itself has made its way to plenty of non-phone devices: smartwatches, TVs, tablets, Chromebooks, your car; you can even make the argument that Windows PCs also have it. To show apps for these other devices, Google is simplifying its in-app experience to show you apps for your non-phone devices.

Don't count on the Galaxy S23 changing Samsung's mind about fast charging
We're a few months out from the expected launch of the Galaxy S23, but that doesn't mean it isn't too early for the rumor mill to start churning. Although it sounds like Samsung is making some big changes to the S23's camera, including an upgrade to a 200MP sensor, the rest of the phone might look a lot like this year's hardware. While that's not necessarily a bad thing — we're pretty fond of the current Galaxy S-series design — it looks like that means we'll also be stuck with some legacy hardware, particularly when it comes to charging.

Google’s latest tool to protect your privacy on Search just went into beta
Even the most privacy conscious among us are often compelled to set up some sort of online presence, and the second you start sharing your personal details, you face the risk of losing control of that info. Anyone interested in looking someone up likely starts right with Google, and they'll easily find anything the search giant has managed to index. Thankfully, the company's been thinking about steps in can take to protect individual privacy, and is now rolling out a new way to request the removal of Search results containing your personal information.

Apple's hubris is standing between the iPhone and a fully baked always-on display
As Android users, mocking Apple for claiming a years-old feature as some revelation is a tradition as old as time. Each September, when the company takes the stage to announce a new iPhone lineup, it occasionally takes something from Android only to hail it as a groundbreaking feature years in the making. As tempting as it might feel to joke about the Dynamic Island this year — the name's just asking for it — it's the always-on display that makes Apple look truly late to the party. Unfortunately for anyone considering the iPhone 14 Pro, the always-on display isn't just bad — it's a complete misunderstanding of what an always-on display should accomplish.

Tile's 'solution' to Bluetooth tracker tag privacy is apparently expensive stickers you can't even actually track
Tracker tags can be a great way to keep tabs on your favorite gadgets and accessories, but as we saw with their rise in popularity following Apple's launch of its own AirTags, the ability to easily track tiny tags opens up a whole hornet's nest of potential privacy issues — nobody wants a stranger tracking them without their knowledge. While most solutions to this have attempted to give users the ability to detect the presence of unknown tags, Tile has come up with an interesting alternative that basically replaces trackers with QR-code-based “this belongs to me” labels.

At the end of the beta process, Pixel users will be enjoying a mid-cycle update that will bring prominent fixes as well as neat features like support for the LC3 audio codec and call clarity enhancement. Appeals court sides with Texas and its social media anti-censorship law
Back in May, we reported on a controversial Texas law that would prohibit operators of web platforms with more than 50 million monthly active users from censoring or banning users for lawful expression of a citizen's "viewpoint," potentially curtailing their ability to moderate inciting content or hate speech. A consortium of tech giants challenged the law on the grounds that the First Amendment protects citizens from the government's control of expression and that operators have the unreserved right to manage speech on private platforms. That argument, though, hasn't resonated with judges.

Buy your mom an iPhone — Sincerely, the Android Police podcast

The sooner Android accepts RCS is dead, the sooner we can choose the next messaging platform that matters
Last week, the world watched as Apple announced its newest phones. As silly — though no less intriguing — as the Dynamic Island might be, the iPhone 14 series fails to fix one of the biggest issues with modern smartphones: messaging. A day after Apple's keynote, Tim Cook took the stage at Vox's Code Conference, confirming the company's position on RCS: it's not interested, and if you want to send your mom high-res videos, you're better off buying her — or yourself — an iPhone.

Play Store ratings finally get relevant for the devices you're using

Google's own Chromebook offerings have always been somewhat aspirational, featuring high-end design and pricey components powered by an operating system that, while increasingly fully featured, can't capitalize on raw horsepower the way a Windows machine might be able to. As Android wants to get rid of hole-punch cameras, Apple doubles down with Dynamic Island
It's often said that when Apple does something, whole industries follow its lead. Most of the time, it's a painfully true axiom. While the company doesn't have a hold over the global smartphone market, it is strong in the premium space, and it's a trendsetter more often than not. We saw the headphone jack die off on the iPhone first, then the wall charger disappeared from the iPhone box. Both of those moves slowly made their way to the Android ecosystem. This year, Apple's cadre of engineers and designers took the iPhone 14 Pro, got rid of the notch, and introduced a pill-shaped camera and equipment cut-out called the Dynamic Island with some unique functionality.

We know Nest will have new products out during the Made by Google event on October 6, but we now know exactly what one of them will look like.

If your lesson plans include YouTube videos, there will be a lot less to worry about
YouTube is home to billions of videos. Most of them are of dubious quality, so one would hope Google's algorithms would bring users substantive and enjoyable content. Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4 survives some serious torture in JerryRigEverything’s durability test
Just one month ago, Samsung unveiled two of its most advanced phones yet, the Galaxy Z Flip 4 and Fold 4. Although they feature plenty of cutting-edge technology, foldables are still somewhat fragile devices. You might want to keep these two away from sharp edges and other pointy objects, given how fragile they are compared to your average slab-of-glass phones. Still, Samsung's been making a point to highlight improvements it's made to durability over previous generations. Curious how true that might be, YouTuber Zack Nelson of JerryRigEverything has put the Galaxy Z Flip 4 through just the sort of trial by fire we'd expect from him.

It's something that is increasingly becoming a problem with TikTok and Instagram doomscrolling, so it's good that the tools for that exist. But the feature now wants to expand into tracking your health more closely than just that, though, by adding cough and snore detection while you're asleep.

Another week, another Pixel 7 Pro surfaces on video
We are weeks away from learning all we can know about the Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro from Google. Facebook and Instagram may eventually have more paywalled features
Paywalled features always have the potential to be annoying, but they're still valuable ways for developers to innovate while continuing to be able to offer free access. While historically a lot of free services have been ad-funded, some companies are increasingly looking at paywalls to compensate for shifting revenue streams — not unlike what Meta’s advertisement-based monetization model is dealing with in the face of changes like Apple's App Tracking Transparency measures. A report now suggests that Meta is working on new paid features for its various social media platforms, and has created a New Monetization Experiences group to drive this effort.

Microsoft saved TikTok from a critical one-click vulnerability
When you’re a creator, your social media accounts are your lifeblood. The best two-factor authentication apps and password managers are absolutely critical to keeping those accounts safe, but they can only do so much when the apps you're using themselves are vulnerable. Imagine clicking on a link that gives a random person unrestricted access to your TikTok account, complete with permission to make private videos public, access your messages, change your bio, and even upload new content. One tap on a targeted link could have spelled the end of your account as you knew it, but thankfully, Microsoft swooped in and identified this vulnerability before any widespread disaster.
