Everything you need to know about the GeForce Now streaming platform

NVIDIA's entry into the streaming wars is seeing some impressive success and substantial challenges.

As companies compete and server technology improves, streaming games is becoming more and more of a viable option. You can use anything from the best gaming phones to your laptop as a great gaming machine, giving players more options than dropping hundreds or thousands on a separate console or gaming PC.

One recent major entrant is NVIDIA GeForce Now, a streaming service for PC games that players already own. Nvidia claims over a million players have tried it out so far. While some publishers are choosing not to support this streaming platform, it does have several major brands backing it. GeForce Now is a clearly viable option for games streaming, right on par with the likes of Google Stadia, Xbox Game Pass, and Amazon Luna.

What is GeForce Now?

GeForce Now is NVIDIA's streaming service. Unlike platforms like Stadia, it does not require buying games over again or limiting yourself to just one gaming library. Instead, players simply stream the PC games that they own on different storefronts, including Steam, the Epic Games Store, and Uplay.

Since the games are being streamed from NVIDIA hardware, this means that players can try out advanced graphics features like 4K HDR or ray-tracing — features that would otherwise cost quite a bit to get running on native hardware — on lesser platforms. You can use the service on other PCs and Macs, NVIDIA Shield devices, mobile devices, and more.

GeForce Now: List of supported devices

GeForce Now is compatible with PC, Mac, and Android. On PC and Mac, your device will need to meet certain baseline requirements, or you can guarantee compatibility with an NVIDIA Shield TV box. If you're uncertain if your device has the power to handle it, check our full list of GeForce Now compatible devices.

As far as internet bandwidth goes, you won't need an incredible amount of speed to connect to NVIDIA's datacenter, but you will need a pretty fast connection in order to stream at the most optimal settings. According to NVIDIA's site, the bandwidth requirements for streaming on GeForce Now are as follows:

  • 10 Megabits per second – Required broadband connection speed
  • 20 Megabits per second – Recommended for 720p 60FPS quality
  • 50 Megabits per second – Recommended for 1080p 60FPS quality
  • 60ms ping time to one of six NVIDIA datacenters world-wide

Is GeForce Now free?

There is a free tier of GeForce Now, which allows you to play in one-hour sessions. The paid tier is $5 a month and includes higher priority access to start playing, as well as extended sessions that aren't limited to one hour. These options are known as the Free and Founder's versions, respectively.

Free Founders Membership
Access Standard Priority
Playtime One hour Extended length
RTX ✔️
Free trial No Free for 90 days
Price Free $4.99/month for one year

Is GeForce Now still in beta?

No. While it was in beta testing for several years, the streaming service exited beta testing back on Feb. 4, 2020. Since then, over a million players have tried out GeForce Now, as per NVIDIA.

GeForce Now list of games

The exact number of games available to players on GeForce Now is too great to list out, because there are a lot. NVIDIA claims that over 1,000 titles are compatible with the service, and keeps an updating list of games on its website in order for fans to make sure what they want to play will work on the streaming service.

On top of keeping their own curated list together, NVIDIA also highlights new games that come to the service every Thursday. Some of the biggest and best currently available on GeForce Now include:

  • Outriders
  • Dead by Daylight
  • World of Tanks
  • Dauntless
  • Fortnite
  • Warframe
  • Control
  • Assassin's Creed: Valhalla

Honor Magic4 Pro hands-on: The Pixel 6 Pro dilemma

Honor has just introduced the Magic4 series at MWC 2022, complete with a new smartwatch and its latest earbuds. The Magic4 series isn’t a drastic departure from the Magic3 it introduced just half a year ago, but it’s packed with the latest technologies like the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 and even more high-quality cameras. We’ve had the chance to give the Magic4 Pro a quick try at the Fira, and it’s definitely an appealing high-end device sporting the newest and best hardware — though we’re wondering if Honor can really ask for €200 more for it than for the regular Magic4.

Open-world adventure games Calico and Lake coming to Stadia soon

Two cozy games that are wildly different.

What you need to know

  • Two open-world adventure games published by Whitethorn Games will be releasing on Stadia soon.
  • Calico tasks players with rebuilding the town's cat café by recruiting animals, meeting townspeople, and making food for them.
  • Lake is a narrative adventure game where the player is free to explore a small town in Oregon, build relationships, deliver mail, or just drive around.

Google announced today that two more games will be "coming soon" to its Stadia platform. Both of the games revealed were published by Whitethorn Games, which specializes in easy-going and stress-free types of games.

The first game coming to Stadia is Calico, a community sim game where you are in charge of rebuilding the town's cat café. Players can explore the forest to befriend animals such as cats, deer, dogs, and even red pandas alongside other townspeople including magical girls and witches. Animals can stay in your party and hang out with you or be sent to their new home at the café to greet customers. The café can also be decorated with different styles of furniture and there is a cooking minigame to sell food that the townspeople would like.

The other game coming soon is Lake, where players follow forty-something Meredith Weiss as she trades her software company job to fill in for her father as a local mail carrier in 1980s Oregon. Players have two weeks to do what they like including delivering the mail, meeting new neighbors, or just staying at home and reading a book.

No release date has been revealed for either of the games, but Google has promised that more than 100 games will launch on Stadia in 2022. The company was able to reach the same goal last year with a few becoming some of the best games on the platform. Almost ten titles have come to Stadia so far this year, and a few more will be coming next month.

PlayStation recap: Horizon Forbidden West launches to rave reviews

Sony also revealed the first images for its upcoming PlayStation VR2 headset.

The shortest month of the year just so happens to bring us a lot of PlayStation news. I'm fudging this recap a little by including PlayStation's acquisition of Bungie, which happened on Jan. 31, but that's only because my January recap and that announcement went up at the exact same time. PlayStation's already off to a hot start in 2022 with the release of Horizon Forbidden West, and it's only set to pick up with games like Gran Turismo 7 and God of War Ragnarok on the docket.

In addition to to having plenty of games, PlayStation's not slowing down on the live action front, either. Uncharted released to mediocre reviews, but we have high hopes for HBO's The Last of Us. Without further ado, here's everything that happened in February.

PlayStation surprises everyone by acquiring Bungie

Here's a funny story: I write these recaps throughout the month, adding more sections as I go along. I usually finish them a few days before the end of the month so that my editor has time to edit and schedule them for the last day. On Jan. 31 at 1 p.m., my January recap went up. Surely there wouldn't be any major news that day, right?

Well guess what else happened on Jan. 31 at 1 p.m..? Sony announced it had bought Bungie, the studio behind the huge live-service shooter Destiny 2. What are the odds? Anyway, that's why this whole piece is now in February's recap. Because timing hates me.

Anyways, PlayStation acquiring Bungie is a big move for the company, especially at its $3.6 billion price tag. It's a strange deal at first glance, specifically with Bungie remaining mostly independent. However, it makes more sense than you think. While PlayStation is known for its cinematic single-player adventures, it can't keep all of its eggs in one basket. Bungie can lend its experience and expertise to help create live service games that can bring in recurring revenue for Sony.

Not only that, but this gives Bungie an avenue to expand the Destiny universe to television or the big screen. Between Sony Entertainment and PlayStation Productions, the team has more than enough ways to adapt the popular franchise.

It's a big move also because it comes on the heels of Microsoft's big announced acquisition of Activision Blizzard. While not nearly comparable (Microsoft's deal will cost nearly $69 billion), it shows that both companies are looking to boost their value and ecosystems over the next couple of years. We can expect way more announcements.

PS VR2 gets a sleek new look

It's been a long time coming, but PlayStation finally unveiled the final look of the PlayStation VR2 headset. It was designed with the PS5 in mind, so it features a slim aesthetic with a white finish and black accents. Sony notes that it has carefully balanced the weight to keep it ergonomic and comfortable. Even with the built-in motor, it comes in at a lower weight than the first PSVR.

Senior art director Yujin Morisawa revealed that its new integrated vent design is one of his favorite parts of the headset. "When I started to work on the design for the PlayStation VR2 headset, one of the areas I wanted to focus on first was the idea of creating a vent in the headset to let air out," he said. "Similar to the vents on the PS5 console that allows airflow. Our engineers came up with this idea as a good way to allow ventilation and avoid having the lens fog up while players are immersed in their VR games. I worked on many design concepts to achieve this, and in the final design, you can see there is a little space in between the top and front surface of the scope that contains the integrated ventilation."

Horizon Forbidden West launches to critical acclaim

Horizon Forbidden West launched on Feb. 18 to praise from just about everybody. It currently sits at an 88 on Metacritic based on 106 critic reviews, including a perfect 5/5 from Android Central. Simply put: Horizon Forbidden West is a masterpiece in every sense of the word. I was lucky enough to review it for us, and it's amazing.

This should come as no surprise given Horizon Zero Dawn's reputation, but it's nonetheless great news for Guerrilla Games, which can continue the franchise. Horizon Forbidden West ends on a huge cliffhanger that sets up a decisive third (and likely final) act. Aloy has the fight of her life ahead of her, and it's going to take everyone working together to stop it. I don't want to spoil just what it is, so you'll need to play through Forbidden West and find that out yourselves.

I spent 45 hours in it to complete my review and have since spent another 10 hours just completing side missions and taking down machines. After looking up all of its trophies, I think I'm going to go for a platinum in it. It's an easy time sink and a hell of a lot of fun to play.

The Uncharted film is... just OK

Pretend to be shocked: the Uncharted movie starring Tom Holland is fine. Nothing to write home about apparently (I haven't actually seen it, but I trust the opinions of others who have). It might be a fun adventure movie, but Holland and Mark Wahlberg were miscast as Nathan Drake and Sully, and it misses out on a lot of the charm we know from the games. It currently has a 40% rating from 189 critics on Rotten Tomatoes. It's fairing better in its audience score, however, sitting at a 90% from over 2,500 ratings.

Uncharted also bagged $44 million at the domestic box office during its three-day opening weekend, which set a record for 2022 so far (via Variety). With continued success, and keeping in mind that its budget was $120 million, we could be seeing more live-action Uncharted projects in the future. In fact, Sony Pictures CEO called it a "a new hit movie franchise for the company."

Gran Turismo 7 headlines first State of Play this year

Sony's first big State of Play for the year focused on none other than Gran Turismo 7. Polyphony Digital is calling it the most complete Gran Turismo ever, with over 400 cars, 30 locations, and 90 layouts at launch.

The popular racing sim franchise is looking bigger and better than ever thanks to the power of the PS5, but those on PS4 can still have their fun, too. Gran Turismo 7 is a cross-gen title, though unlike Horizon Forbidden West, those wishing to upgrade from the PS4 version to the PS5 version will need to pay an additional $10.

Gran Turismo 7 on the horizon

Hot on the heels of Horizon Forbidden West, Gran Turismo 7 is expected to launch on March 4. There seems to be no slowing down Sony this year. And even if its PS VR2 headset doesn't make it in 2022, we're sure to be hearing a lot about it in the coming months. Until next time 👋

Samsung confirms the future of the Galaxy Note line at MWC 2022

The Galaxy Note brand is dead, surprising absolutely no one.

What you need to know

  • Samsung's mobile experience chief confirmed that the Galaxy Note brand is no more.
  • He says future "Ultra" smartphones will feature the S Pen.
  • This comes just after the launch of the Galaxy S22 Ultra, which adopts the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra design.

With the launch of the Galaxy S22 Ultra, it was pretty much written on the wall that Samsung was done with the Note series. Still, Samsung never quite said it was the end, at least not until MWC 2022.

According to Dailian (via The Verge), the head of Samsung's smartphone division, Roh Tae-moon, told reporters that we should not expect Galaxy Note-branded smartphones anymore. Instead, he says (via translation) that the "Galaxy Note will come out as 'Ultra' every year in the future."

The company skipped out on launching a Galaxy Note in 2021, so it's not exactly surprising. Signs were everywhere that the company was preparing to sunset the Note brand, ever since the launch of the Galaxy S21 Ultra and the growing impact of the global chip shortage on the availability of the best Android phones.

Fortunately, that doesn't seem to deter Note fans. Samsung recently announced record preorders for its Galaxy S22 series, with the Galaxy S22 Ultra leading with 60% of sales. However, Roh remains optimistically cautious about the success of the latest device, saying "we still have to wait and see."

While we can expect the future of the Galaxy Note brand to rest with the "Ultra" phones, rumors are swirling that Samsung is preparing to include a built-in S Pen with the Galaxy Z Fold 4. The foldable is expected to launch later this year, giving buyers a much bigger canvas for their S Pen doodles while not forcing users to purchase a separate S Pen and case.

These are the best Stadia games available to play right now in 2022

Google has some of the biggest AAA games on its platform, and the catalog keeps getting bigger and better. With more than a year on the market, dozens of games on Stadia are available to play instantly with no downloads, patches, or updates required. So whether you love shooters, RPGs, online multiplayer, platformers, indies, or something in between, there are undoubtedly games for you on Stadia. Here's our list of the best Google Stadia games available to you right now.

Featured favorite

Cyberpunk 2077 for Stadia

CD Projekt RED's open-world epic may not be the genre-defining revolution a lot had hoped for, but the Stadia version plays great. While the PS4 and Xbox One editions currently suffer from horrible performance issues and tons of bugs, the Stadia version is comparable to playing on a gaming PC and is arguably the best way to play the game. I enjoyed it quite a lot in my review and am excited to see it get better.

Gather your party

Baldur's Gate 3 (Early Access) for Stadia

Staff Pick

Even though it's still in Early Access, Larian's Baldur's Gate 3 is already shaping up to be another RPG masterpiece from one of the genre's greats. The developers behind the critically-acclaimed Divinity: Original Sin series have taken the reins of the iconic Dungeons & Dragons universe in this amazing feast of turn-based tactics and wonderful storytelling. It also plays well on Stadia via PC and has surprisingly good controller support. Unfortunately, it's not on consoles yet, so this is the only way to play the game right now without a gaming PC.

Action horror at its finest

Resident Evil Village for Stadia

Resident Evil Village continues the story of Ethan Winters and his family dealing with the fallout from Resident Evil 7: Biohazard. However, unlike Biohazard, Resident Evil Village focuses much more on the action-horror aspect of the classic franchise. It gives players incredible moments to play through as they explore a castle filled with terrifying (and tall) vampires, a village overrun by Lycans, and much more.

Dawn of the Dark Age

Assassin's Creed Valhalla for Stadia

There have been many great Assassin's Creed games, and many of them are on Stadia, but the recent Valhalla is excellent in its own right. It's an epic Viking story that puts you in the shoes of Eivor, a Viking warrior hellbent on revenge and conquering the lands of England. It continues the franchise's diversion into the open-world RPG genre and streamlines many elements to make it one of the best in the entire series. If you sign up for Ubisoft on Stadia, you can play a ton of Assassin's Creed games for one low subscription fee.

Silent assassin

Hitman 3 for Stadia

The Hitman games are must-plays for sure as the first games on Stadia to employ the innovative new State Share feature. Game creation for all

Crayta for Stadia

Here's your family-friendly entry on the list. Think of Crayta as a combination of the world-building and game creation toolset of Roblox. Still, it's distilled into an accessible and appealing format with Fortnite-style visuals. You can crack open the editor on PC to really get into the nuts and bolts or hop on for some quick and easy fun with friends. Crayta is whatever you want it to be, and now it's free for anyone and everyone on Stadia, not just Pro subscribers.

Guardians and glory

Destiny 2: New Light for Stadia

The ability to play Bungie's popular first-person shooter on your phone is one of the most exciting things about Stadia. The base game and its two expansions are currently free with your Stadia account, so you can test out the systems and explore the game's strange worlds on your own or with friends. Once you've honed your skills, you can start getting competitive with PvP or buy some of the expansions to keep the adventure going.

The Elder Scrolls Online for Stadia

As the only true MMO on Stadia, Elder Scrolls Online doesn't have a lot of competition. Luckily, it's also one of the best MMOs on the market. With the Stadia version, you get ultimate flexibility and play on your TV, PC, or phone. Turning in dailies and completing quick quests on mobile is super simple and makes it a great game to play in both short spurts and long, all-night sessions. Of course, no mandatory subscription fee is nice too.

Pedal to the metal

GRID for Stadia

Every best games list needs a solid racing title, and GRID fits the bill perfectly. It has an excellent blend between arcade-style racing and simulation mechanics, offering something that's not too easy but not too complex. Visually it's stunning, and it even has a Stadia-exclusive mode that can cram up to 40-players into a single race. It gets very intense very quickly.

Tiny terrors

Little Nightmares 2 for Stadia

This latest endeavor from Tarsier Studios is a significant improvement over its predecessor and delivers on its promises of a world full of "charming horror" perfectly. Little Nightmares 2 is unsettling, tense, and downright terrifying at times without ever losing the innocent exterior that draws you in. Definitely one of the first must-play games of 2021; it's got the benefit of being included at no extra charge in Stadia Pro for all subscribers. Of course, you do not need to have played the previous game before playing this one, but it will enhance the story's impact.

Fatality

Mortal Kombat 11 for Stadia

Play as characters from throughout the fighting game's long history or test your moves with some famous new challengers like the Joker and Spawn. This version also provides a new custom character variation system where the more you play, the more looks and moves you unlock.

Wild wild west

Red Dead Redemption 2 for Stadia

Play as an outlaw trying to survive in the waning days of the Wild West in this sprawling open-world game. Make your choices carefully as you try to keep your gang together while evading lawmen. Red Dead Redemption 2 is also like two games in one, thanks to Red Dead Online's massive success and popularity.

Evading death

Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice for Stadia

Stadia may not have any of the Dark Souls games, but you can enjoy From Software's Sekiro, which has refined the formula to a sharp edge. This game really pushes Stadia to its limits as a platform due to how demanding the split-second timing requirements are for parrying and attacking. It's a great game, but not if your internet connection is anything but rock-solid.

$60 at Stadia

Pixel-perfect crafting

Terraria for Stadia

At first glance, it's pretty easy to write off Terraria as just another Minecraft clone, but this time with 2D pixel art visuals. While true on the surface, there is much more to Terraria than initially meets the eye. The Stadia version is a perfect port of the excellent sandbox survival game with zero compromises versus its dedicated console counterparts. But it still may not be suitable for you if you're not into extremely open-ended crafting games.

Stream on

Since Stadia launched, Google has gone to work bringing some of the best games out there to its platform. Every month users see a wide range of new releases from AAA classics to smaller indie games and everything in between. No matter what type of games you're into, you're bound to find something great on Stadia. At the top of that list is absolutely Cyberpunk 2077, which defies logic and plays best on Stadia compared to most other options.

Other massive open-world games like Assassin's Creed Valhalla and Red Dead Redemption 2, Baldur's Gate 3, even in Early Access, is shaping up to be one of the RPG greats.

Whether you're playing on your smartphone, TV, or a web browser, Stadia has dozens of great games for you to explore right now. So, instead of trying to find something worth playing like in Stadia's first few months, now the question is, how do you find the time to play all of these great games? Also, what do you play with? There are plenty of great wireless game controllers for Stadia to get you started.

Meta, Google and Twitter block Russian state media from running ads

Russia's state media outlets are prohibited from making money from their content.

What you need to know

  • Some of the U.S. big tech have barred Russian state-affiliated media from running ads on their platforms.
  • RT, among others, is prohibited from monetizing its content on Facebook, YouTube and Twitter.
  • The ad restrictions are among the companies' efforts to respond to the escalating military conflict in Ukraine.

In response to Russia's military operations in Ukraine, several U.S. tech giants have restricted the ability of Russian state media outlets to make money from their content on those platforms.

Meta, for its part, has barred Russian state media from running ads and monetizing their content on Facebook in all countries where the social platform is available. Nathaniel Gleicher, Meta's head of security policy, tweeted:

We are now prohibiting Russian state media from running ads or monetizing on our platform anywhere in the world. We also continue to apply labels to additional Russian state media. These changes have already begun rolling out and will continue into the weekend.

Google-owned YouTube has also imposed the same restrictions on several state media outlets affiliated with Russia, per NPR. For example, the video-sharing platform has prevented RT and other Russian state media from earning with ads. YouTube is also hiding those channels from its recommendations and blocking them in Ukraine at the behest of the country's government.

Twitter also announced that it is "temporarily pausing advertisements in Ukraine and Russia to ensure critical public safety information is elevated and ads don't detract from it." According to NPR, the micro-blogging site already bans ads from state media since 2019.

Ad restrictions aren't the only steps being taken by the U.S. tech giants amid the military conflict in Ukraine. Meta has also set up a Special Operations Center to help respond to the crisis in real time. Facebook also rolled out a feature that lets users in Ukraine lock their profiles with a single click, among others.

Instagram has also started rolling out a privacy and security alert in the embattled country, with Meta's security teams keeping an eye out for "emerging threats."

A few days ago, Google outlined the steps it's taking to support those affected by the Ukraine invasion, including clamping down on misinformation and helping keep users safe online.

Faster wireless with 5G has made it to cheap phones, and with the network's footprint rapidly increasing, it really is time to make sure your phone supports the new tech. The Galaxy A42 5G comes with a Snapdragon 750G with 4GB of RAM and a huge 5,000mAh battery. Samsung has included one of its beautiful AMOLED displays and a 48MP main camera for a solid budget camera experience.

The Samsung Galaxy S22 keeps its eye on the prize with a sensible level of restraint missing from the rest of the S22 series. This phone has the same Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 CPU package as the rest of the line with a 6.1-inch 120Hz display with glass out to the edge and a hole-punch camera. Around the back, you get a 50MP main shooter alongside a 12MP ultra-wide and 10MP telephoto camera so you're ready for any situation. Plenty of choice on Verizon's network

Verizon supports the majority of the best Android phones if you want to buy unlocked. If you want to buy your phone from Verizon, you can pay full price to get the phone from the carrier or can opt for monthly payments on your bill. The latter is required for some discounts so it can be worth it but with 36-month payment plans being the only option, you may find yourself paying the device off early if you like to upgrade frequently.

The Google Pixel 6 is priced like a mid-range phone, but it stands toe-to-toe with the best phones on the market with Google's Tensor CPU delivering plenty of performance and the camera hardware working with the software to provide rich photos with realistic colors. You also get a beautiful display with the 6.4-inch 90Hz OLED showing off the newest builds of Android.

The Galaxy Z Flip 3 takes Samsung's best hardware and packs it into a stunning folding form factor. This phone has one of the fastest CPUs you can put in a phone, the Snapdragon 888, and 5G support on Verizon's current and upcoming sub-6 5G as well as mmWave networks. So if your family has signed up for one of the best cell phone plans on Verizon and you want something unique, the Z Flip 3 is the right choice. If you're a Samsung fan, you can also get the latest Galaxy S22 phones on the carrier.

Designing the perfect cheap phone requires a ton of finesse since you need to trim features in a way that impacts the user as little as possible. Samsung is an expert in this field and has delivered an attractive phone with solid performance in the Galaxy A42 5G. This phone punches well above its weight with support for Verizon's 5G network, including Ultra-Wideband, a massive 5,000mAh battery, and an AMOLED display.

Play on — these are the best sports games for Android

Get your game on — even in the off-season — with the best sports games available for Android.

After a few golden years of fantastic entries, it seems like most mobile sports games have succumbed to the freemium model. There are far too few quality titles available that just let you jump into the game without having to deal with player cards, pointless upgrades, or waiting for stamina meters to refill. Nearly all the top mobile sports game franchises have switched over to a team-building system that requires you to unlock (or buy) card packs to upgrade your team.

However, there are still great games to be played. We've tried to cover the five major North American sports here with some extras thrown in for fun. Be sure to note which games are more sim-based for the hardcore sports fan and which ones offer a more arcade-like option for casual players.

Want something a bit less sporty? We have a list of the best Android games overall, too!

Best sports games for Android

Australian Open Game

This is the best tennis game I've found for Android. Developed by Big Ant Studios for Tennis Australia to help promote the Australian Open, this free title delivers a surprisingly robust number of gameplay options. You can play a quick match, beat the AO tournament to unlock the other Grand Slam events, or play career mode with your customized player.

The default controls automatically position your player to return shots with swipes used to perform different shots, but there are settings for more advanced controls as well. You can also unlock all of the 2019 Australian Open players. As you might expect, the career mode gets progressively more difficult as you carry yourself to victory. Play this great title on your best Android phone for a super fun time!

This is by far the best tennis game on Android, Australian Open lets you create your own star player and progress through to victory.

Bowling Crew

The only game I ever really played on Wii Sports was the bowling one, especially once I figured out how to do so without standing up. Speaking of bowling, our next game on this list is Bowling Crew. This is one of the best bowling games I've managed to find on the Play Store.

First off, Bowling Crew is a gorgeous 3D bowling game. Second, it's PvP-based. Third, it involves plenty of progression to keep you interested as you go along. You can unlock new bowling balls (through gameplay and microtransactions) so you have something nice to look at while you play. It's a ton of fun, easy to play, and there's a lot of replayability.

Of course, it wouldn't be a mobile game without the typical microtransaction gotchas. Your stamina meter is based on the chips you earn (which you can buy, of course). Gold is how you buy cases, which give you unlockable items like new ball cards, chips, and so on. There's a bunch of boosters and unlocks you can purchase, too.

Boxing Star

One of the better mobile boxing games available right now, Boxing Star is easy to pick up, is packed with interesting features, and boasts some pretty great gameplay. Using intuitive virtual and touchscreen controls, you can dodge and guard against your opponent's fists while doling out your own straights, hooks, and uppercuts. Stunning an opponent opens them up to a frenzied special attack.

Winning matches in Story Mode will net you some in-game currency and new gear. You can customize your boxer's physical appearance and all of the "swank" that comes with boxing stardom. You can choose what ride you're sporting, the crew you roll with, and even where you live. Some of the really good gear comes from PvP rewards, which are implemented in a way that incentivizes IAPs. For example, you might win a package after a PvP match, but you can't actually open it until 5 minutes have passed. These timers start to increase the higher your rank goes, so it can get annoying if you're not a patient person.

Boxing Star is free-to-play but some items can also be purchased with real money. However, the game gets a brownie point in this category for including a rarely seen feature: the ability to turn IAPs off. You can simply disable them from the game settings menu, which is a superb quality-of-life measure in my book. With regular updates still being implemented by the dev team, Boxing Star just keeps getting better and better.

eFootball PES 2021

Konami's celebrated football franchise is back for 2021 with enhanced dribble controls and options for local and real-time online matches against friends or strangers. It's all part of the developer's focus on taking this mobile soccer game into the eSports realm with competitive online play that's responsive and rewarding.

The Inspire system lets you influence how your teammates play, adding new levels of complexity. This game tries its best to provide you with a tailored experience based on your playstyle. I'd say the biggest downside with eFootball PES 2020 is that it's another freemium sports game; it's also a very large download.

Like other games of its kind, eFootball PES 2021 contains the usual spread of microtransactions. Your main purchase options are to buy myClub Coins, ranging from $0.99 to $99.99 with the normal bundle deals to get you "free" additional Coins. These Coins let you recruit better players quicker, sign better managers, borrow players from other people for longer, renew contracts, and you probably guessed this one, refresh your stamina. You can also buy Squad packs, like Manchester United, ensuring that you'll always have the latest players for your in-game squad.

FIE Swordplay

Ever wanted to try your hand at virtual fencing? I sure did as soon as I heard of FIE Swordplay, a game that focuses solely on the fine art of fencing. There's a lot of content to play through as you learn legitimately real fencing techniques. Controls are simple to grasp and make the gameplay easy to get into.

FIE Swordplay features both a PvE campaign and PvP so you can test your skills. I wasn't very good, but I never had trouble finding a match. There's a lot of customization here, so you can fine-tune your gear and your appearance.

Of course, there are microtransactions, as you might expect from a free-to-play game. These let you purchase in-game cosmetics, but I found that I often had more currency than I had things to purchase in-game. The microtransactions feel like an afterthought but in a good way. You can also buy new skins, like a musketeer and a knight, for five bucks each.

FIE Swordplay

Free w/ IAPs at Google Play Store

FIE Swordplay has a lot going for it, even for a free-to-play game. If you like fencing, this is a game you should check out; it has both PvE and PvP.

Fishing Life

Fishing is a terribly underrated sport in real life and is perhaps even more so in the virtual world. This is a real tragedy, as fishing can run the gamut from a relaxing, almost meditative experience, to a heart-pounding struggle between man and nature. Fishing Life knows what it's about and chooses to go the route of a more soothing take on fishing. The soundtrack is a low-key acoustic affair that pairs very well with the game's beautiful minimalistic graphics and art style. Enjoying the passage of time and watching the sunset turn into a starry sky from your boat is just one of the many nice touches in this quaint, yet engrossing, game.

In Fishing Life, you set out onto the water as a man looking to escape his woes for a little while and relive the childhood joys of fishing with his father. The controls are very simple, there is a variety of craft you can fish from, and of course, there are tons of fish that you can catch. From basic little fishies to tuna, shark, and even all the way up to whales, there's not much that you can't catch in Fishing Life.

This charming title is free with ads and in-app purchases. If you're looking for a chill game to wind down with, I can highly recommend Fishing Life.

Escape the troubles of everyday life out on the open waters of Fishing Life. With simple controls, stunning graphics, more fish than you can count, and a great atmosphere, you can easily sink hours into this delightfully soothing game.

Golf Star

Golf Star is the best golfing game on Android, featuring excellent graphics and intuitive controls. The game lets you customize your golfer and jump into Career Mode, where you learn the ropes and hone your skills. It's going to take you a bit of time to figure out the intricacies of the physics and how to properly read the greens and aim your putts, but you'll pick it up in no time.

Beyond Career Mode, there are multiplayer modes such as Tournament Mode and Goodwill Match Mode that let you compete in one-on-one competitions against live opponents. It's a big game, though, so be sure you have space and bandwidth to install it.

The microtransactions involve buying Coins and GP to purchase cosmetics (some of which boost stats), consumable items to make playing the game easier, and VIP memberships to unlock better items each week.

The best golfing game on Android, Golf Star may come with ads and IAPs, but it features some beautiful graphics and great golfing physics.

Grand Mountain Adventure: Snowboard Premiere

Grand Mountain Adventure feels like the spiritual successor to the 90s classic SkiFree, offering endless and calming gameplay. You get to explore the first mountain for free, completing timed runs to unlock new ski lifts that let you access new areas of the mountain.

There is a lot to explore just on the first mountain, let alone on the others. An in-app purchase unlocks the other seven mountains, along with the ability to shred powder on a gnarly snowboard. Featuring a ton of content, Grand Mountain Adventure is one of the best winter sports games for mobile.

Grow in the Hole

Grow in the Hole is a minimalist golfing adventure where the ball grows bigger with each failed shot. You line up the trajectory and strength of each attempt and let it fly! Hopefully, you make it in the hole because the larger the ball gets, the harder things become. The wacky physics engine doesn't help you much, either.

This is a side-view, procedurally-generated game that's a ton of fun. It supports local multiplayer, too, so that you can laugh at your and your friends' failures. There are a lot of different ways to play Grow in the Hole, including some plain weird modifiers that change up how things will play out. Seriously, give this one a try.

Check out this side-view "golfing" game where each failed shot means the ball grows bigger! Things can get pretty wacky so strap yourself in for a game that's fun and wild.

I'm Ping Pong King :)

Why should tennis get all the glory all the time? Isn't it time for ping pong to ascend the throne of ball whackin' competitive fun? Well, the developers over at Orangenose Studios are coming for that crown with I'm Ping Pong King :) —and yes, the smiley face is part of the title.

The concept and execution are stupidly simple: all you have to do is tap left or right on the screen to move your ping pong master left and right to return the ball. The trick is that it's FAST. Believe me, your eyes will occasionally struggle to keep up with the frantic ping pong action but man, is it a rush when you win!

To complement its simple gameplay and charmingly minimalistic stickman designs, I'm Ping Pong King :) is free and monetized through ads and in-app purchases. You can, however, pay a mere $2 to remove ads. Now get in on this fun!

Rapid-fire stick figure ping pong action has never been more fun than with I'm Ping Pong King :).

Kick Hero

One of my personal favorites on this list, Kick Hero blends a side-scrolling brawler with a sports game. Honestly, the latter descriptor is pretty loose, but hey, the game involves kicking soccer balls at people. It's hilarious and I recommend you give it a try.

The main gist is to tap the screen once the ball hits the circle and score combos with perfect timing. You kick fireballs, drop lightning, and other cool effects. There are boss battles, the art style is awesome, and Kick Hero is otherwise just a wonderful game.

You can pay a mere $1.99 to remove ads or spend a few extra bucks to unlock different characters. Otherwise, you earn coins during the game to unlock additional goodies. So if you like Kick Hero, you remove the ads and get the two DLC characters at your leisure.

Kick Hero is a side-scrolling brawler meeting a sports game. Really, it's more so the former, but man is it a fun time.

Madden NFL 22 Mobile Football

Whether we like it or not, Madden NFL Mobile Football reigns supreme among the few playable American football games available for Android, with the latest edition adding a redesigned GM mode.

This is the only way to play as or with your favorite NFL players and teams on Android. For your time, you get competitive play, dynamic football seasons, and new strategies to build your gameplay style around. There's also a co-op mode for you to help out your friends in their seasons or for them to help you.

The microtransactions are your typical fare. You start off with Madden Cash, the main in-game currency (there's also Gems). The prices start at $4.99 and go all the way up to $99.99, which isn't too unusual. Cash goes to buying in-game card packs, which unlock new players. You can also buy Stamina so that you can play more once you run out of energy. As I said, it's the usual stuff that we'd expect from a freemium title.

Madden NFL 22 Mobile Football

For better or for worse, Madden is the quintessential American football video game experience. There just isn't much else on Android.

MLB 9 Innings 22

The 2020 edition of Nine Innings builds on the franchise's great graphics and gameplay, featuring all 30 MLB ballparks and over 1,700 players carefully rendered in 3D for an authentic gameplay experience. There are multiple ways to play with gameplay optimized for one-handed controls.

You have the choice to play on offense or defense or let the game run on autoplay. You can go against other players across the world in the Ranked Battle, Clutch Hits, and Club Battle modes. Or you can also just stick to the League Mode — whichever appeals to you.

Microtransactions here are what you'd expect. You have a selection of different player packs, going all the way up to $99.99. These packs contain different tiers of players and gear, or you can pay to upgrade your existing players with a Grade Increase Ticket. Time limitations, like "Players of the Month" for the Preferred Player Pack, exist to increase FOMO, too. All of that being said, this is easily the best baseball game available for Android.

If you like baseball, then this the Android game for you. Enjoy one of several modes and plenty of choice on how you play.

NBA 2K20

NBA 2K20 is a rare premium sports title for Android that doesn't rely on microtransactions and loot crates, which automatically makes it a great game, in my opinion. The graphics and presentation are top-notch and compare nicely to the console versions.

NBA 2K20 offers multiple game modes including the MyCareer Run story mode, Run The Streets, and NBA Stories for reliving some of the greatest moments in NBA History. There's also online multiplayer and full support for Bluetooth controllers.

This game is a rare treat as far as sports games on Android go. Even if you're not the biggest basketball fan, this is your best bet for a premium sportsball title on your phone.

NBA 2K20

$6 at Google Play Store

Not something you see too often, NBA 2K20 is a premium sports game that packs in a lot of content all while looking pretty.

NBA Jam

NBA Jam is a classic title that continues to be updated by the developers and remains one of the most polished and fun sports games in the Google Play Store. This remake of the 90s arcade classic features all the fast-paced two-on-two action you remember with upgraded graphics and rosters.

There are four modes for you to dive into, including local and online multiplayer. Touch controls are simple and responsive, making it super easy to set up an epic alley-oop, or sink three shots in a row and hear Tim Kitzrow — the original NBA JAM commentator — yell his infamous line, "HE'S ON FIRE!"

NBA Jam

$5 at Google Play Store

Enjoy one of the best throwbacks on the Play Store to the golden era of arcade games. NBA JAM is a nostalgia-fest that is also really good.

OK Golf

OK Golf hearkens back to the simpler golf games from the arcade days. There aren't any fancy drills, clubs, and tournaments to worry about. Just drag back on the screen, aim, and let loose to watch the golf ball fly toward your intended destination. That's really all there is to it.

The graphics are simplistic, but they look great. The courses are varied and the simple gameplay keeps you hooked. I'm not really a golf fan, and I'm consequently deplorable at anything that has to do with the sport, but I liked OK Golf. It's pretty chill and it's only a couple of dollars on the Play Store. There aren't any additional ads or IAPs to worry about, either.

OK Golf

$3 at Google Play Store

OK Golf lets you relax while you send golf balls off into oblivion on one of many beautiful courses. This premium game is a one-time purchase.

Retro Bowl

A lot of folks haven't heard of Retro Bowl yet, but this 8-bit hidden gem deserves to be on every sports fan's list of games to play. The gameplay is easy-to-grasp and the game itself is packed with loads of extra content to keep players engaged. During actual matches, you control only your offense by pulling back on the touchscreen to change the angle and power of a pass or tap your running back to run the ball. AI controls your team's defense so you don't need to worry about that. The franchise mode, however, is where the real magic of Retro Bowl lies.

Franchise mode's management options are surprisingly fleshed out, allowing you to build your roster, hire players, hold press interviews, and keep fans happy. You'll also manage your salary and even budget for stadium upgrades. This is just the start of what Retro Bowl is working with and it's no wonder that this charming game has amassed such a following. Retro Bowl's first four games are free and just $0.99 to keep playing after that.

Retro Bowl

Free, $1 to unlock at Google Play Store

Don't let the pixel graphics fool you, Retro Bowl is anything but surface-level. This excellent title has some of the best team management you'll find in mobile football games.

Rocket League Sideswipe

If you thought that the frantic energy of Rocket League couldn't possibly be translated to mobile with success, you're dead wrong and Rocket League Sideswipe is the proof. The trick is that the developer, Psyonix, didn't take any shortcuts. No shoddy ports here, just a fully redesigned mobile-friendly version of the rocket-car soccer action we all know and love.

Rather than have gameplay take place in a 3D space, Sideswipe made the choice to transition to a 2D presentation that looks just as slick as its console cousin. The simplified perspective helps the overall experience, as do the choices to make 1v1 and 2v2 match limits and 2-minute match time limits. There are even online and offline modes to make the game accessible to even more players.

Rocket League Sideswipe is free to play but heavily monetized through in-app purchases. All told though, the game is fun and plays great, so Rocket League fans are likely to love it.

Skateboard Party 3 Pro

Fans of the classic Tony Hawk Pro Skater games from back in the day who lament the storied franchise's current state (not counting the upcoming remasters) should check out Skateboard Party 3. It's a throwback to those classic skateboarding games we loved before things went awry.

The game physics and controls feel very familiar and you're given a couple of game modes to choose from. In Career Mode, you get four minutes to explore the eight different locations and rack up a huge score, collect P-A-R-T-Y scattered around as floating letters, and find other hidden items.

Things are unlocked by spending experience points, which you collect by completing challenges and landing tricks. Another throwback to the good ol' days!

Skateboard Party 3 Pro

$2 w/ IAPs at Google Play Store

If you grew up with the Tony Hawk skateboarding games, Skateboard Party 3 Pro is just for you. There's plenty to do and see, and it feels like the classics while being a new experience.

Snowboard Party: World Tour

Snowboard Party: World Tour is easily the best snowboarding game available on the Play Store. The graphics are great, the pop-punk soundtrack is fitting, and the touch controls are surprisingly tight. There are also four different modes to choose from — Time-Attack, Freestyle, Big Air, and Halfpipe, along with a multiplayer mode for playing against your friends.

Master all of the fancy tricks, collect the different snowboards, and earn the highest score. There are 16 snowboarders to customize and upgrade, which you can do without spending a dime — although in-app purchases are included, which let you speed up progress, unlock additional XP or get temporary boosters, and remove ads. Snowboard Party is also compatible with controllers, too.

Snowboard Party: World Tour

Free w/ ads, IAPs at Google Play Store

Another fantastic winter sports game for Android, Snowboard Party: World Tour features a ton to do and collect.

Ted Ginn: Kick Return Football

If Madden wasn't to your taste, but you still want some American football action, then check out Kick Return Football. It's a fun and unique take on the sport and reminds me of those old handheld football games from the '90s and '00s. Draw and swipe your way to the endzone!

This game is built for touch controls, and they're really easy to pick up and learn. Soon enough, you'll be managing your team and outwitting your opponent to victory. There are tournaments and startling good rewards for touchdowns and wins. There's still some real football strategy here, and even as someone who doesn't like football, I had fun with this one.

Sadly, there are microtransactions in Kick Return Football, some of which are blatantly pay-to-win. There's one that starts your team off with 21 points from the get-go, or another that adds an extra point to each touchdown. You can also double your in-game earnings. All of these seem to be one-time purchases, but there you go. And, of course, you can buy more of that in-game currency.

Ted Ginn: Kick Return Football

Free w/ ads, IAPs at Google Play Store

Enjoy a different take on American football with Kick Return Football. There's plenty to do with some of the best touch controls I've seen in a sports game.

Touchgrind BMX 2

As an avid fan of the X Games and a person with absolutely zero talent for sweet stunts, BMX games are a rare opportunity for me to live out my impossible dreams. In Touchgrind BMX 2, you control a riderless bike through some incredibly sick environments, doing just as many sick moves as you can using Touchgrind BMX's signature two-finger controls. This game is native to mobile, so the touchscreen controls are excellent.

The bike customization options are decent and a fun way to tweak your ride to suit your style. What's more, the graphics are really quite nice and the massive environments are candy for the eyes. The audio quality is good overall and the soundtrack is okay. I didn't personally love the OST, but that's an opinion not a condemnation of the game's quality.

Touchgrind BMX 2 is free on Android with ads and in-app purchases, but if you're a Play Pass subscriber then you'll have no ads and you can bypass the IAPs. Touchgrind BMX 2 is one of the highest-rated sports games on Android for good reason. Check it out and get your X Games fix while you can!

Touchgrind BMX 2

One of the best BMX games you can find on mobile, Touchgrind BMX 2 takes everything that made the first game good and cranked it all up to 11.
