Samsung Galaxy S20 series update brings improved camera, new security patch

Update, April 1, 2020 (2AM ET): Samsung isn’t stopping at just one camera-focused update, as the firm is reportedly pushing out another update that targets the camera experience.

SamMobile reports that Galaxy S20 series users in Hong Kong and Taiwan are receiving a 435MB update (build number: G98x0ZHU1ATCT). Furthermore, the changelog notes that you’re getting improved camera performance in general and the April 2020 security patch.

The outlet says that Samsung’s updates for these regions are often different from OTAs for the rest of the world, but we can nevertheless expect the April 2020 security patch at the very least.

Original article: Welcome to the Samsung Galaxy S20 update hub! Here you’ll find all the latest information on software updates for the Samsung Galaxy S20, Galaxy S20 Plus, and Galaxy S20 Ultra. We’ll tell you what the current software versions are for each device and also give you a heads up that new updates are rolling out.

Keep in mind that the Samsung Galaxy S20 updates usually roll out to all three devices at the same time. However, different variants of the devices — such as carrier-branded versions and unlocked versions — usually see updates at different times.

Have you not yet purchased a Galaxy S20 phone? Check out the deals below. Head further down the page for the historical information on each Galaxy S20 update.

Samsung Galaxy S20 The latest and greatest from Samsung
The Samsung Galaxy S20, Galaxy S20 Plus, and Galaxy S20 Ultra are super-premium 5G smartphones from the South Korean company. No matter what you're looking for, the Galaxy S20 line likely has something to suit your needs.

Samsung Galaxy S20, S20 Plus, and S20 Ultra updates

  • Current stable version: Android 10
  • When will the Galaxy S20, S20 Plus, and S20 Ultra get Android 11?: December 2020 (estimated)

Samsung launched the family of Galaxy S20 phones on February 11, 2020. Pre-orders for the devices started on February 21 and the devices will land in stores on March 6. Every device in the family will launch with Android 10 out of the box (skinned over with Samsung’s One UI 2.0, of course).

Samsung has gotten much faster and more regular with software updates as of late. We saw the Galaxy S10 and Galaxy Note 10 families get Android 10 in record time for the OEM. As such, it’s reasonable to assume the launch of Android 11 will be even faster this year. Although we can’t make any promises, it’s likely the Samsung Galaxy S20 update to the newest version of Android will land before 2020 comes to a close.

Before the Galaxy S20 family of phones even hit store shelves, Samsung already began releasing its first update. According to Tizen Help, the update is rolling out to South Korean S20 Ultra devices, and it fixes a few camera issues while also delivering the March Android security patch. This means that when you take your Galaxy S20 Ultra out of the box on March 6, there will likely be an update waiting for you.

Verizon also began pushing out a pre-release update to its Galaxy S20 Plus and Galaxy S20 Ultra variants on March 2. The update is said to bring performance enhancements to both devices and it includes the March security patch.

Shortly after that, the entire T-Mobile Galaxy S20 line began receiving the March security patch too. The update started rolling out while some lucky customers got their devices a few days ahead of the official March 6 launch date.

A second pre-release update was also rolled out to the Galaxy S20 phone. It brought further improvements to the camera performance and overall user experience, including enhanced touch gestures.

Following the release of the S20 series, Samsung sent out a firmware update to the Exynos variants of the phones. The update brought a new version of the camera app (10.0.01.98) to all three Galaxy S20 phones. It also fixed the slow autofocus problem some users were facing on the new flagships. The Snapdragon models gained this update a few weeks later, bringing an improved camera experience too.

Here are the current stable versions of each device in the Galaxy S20 family:

Has Apple CEO Tim Cook successfully been "playing" the president?

We've said it before, and we will say it again just so it is perfectly clear what we're talking about. The tariffs imposed by the Trump administration on certain imports into the states from China do not and never have resulted in China paying the U.S. one red cent. Despite tweets sent out a number of times by the president stating that the U.S. Treasury was receiving millions of dollars from China because of the tariffs, that is simply not true.

You might want uninstall Houseparty, expert calls it a privacy ‘trojan horse’

Houseparty app on smartphone stock photo games

The group video chat app Houseparty has spiked in popularity after millions of people around the world began practicing social isolation amid the COVID-19 pandemic. Houseparty touts a slew of unique, easy-to-use features that make group video calls more fun, but it also comes with a plethora of privacy concerns.

Digital Privacy Expert Ray Walsh told Digital Trends that Houseparty users need to be aware that the app collects a “worrying amount of personal information.” This includes geolocation data, which Houseparty can theoretically use to track down its users. Walsh says the service is particularly scary considering how much information the government could glean from the app if it wanted to.

“If the pandemic continues for any prolonged period, the chances that apps like this could be placed under surveillance [by the US government] to monitor how COVID-19 is spreading is a very real possibility,” Walsh said.

Gehan Gunasekara, an associate professor in commercial law at the University of Auckland, told Radio New Zealand that Houseparty is a privacy “trojan horse” that’s “able to basically track your every move.” By downloading and using the app, Gunasekara claims your allowing it to track your location, who you contact, how often you contact them, and more.

To further the app’s privacy suspicions, Twitter users have been claiming that since downloading Houseparty, their other social accounts and subscriptions like PayPal, Netflix, Instagram, Spotify, and even online-banking accounts have been compromised. Houseparty addressed the issue on Twitter, saying this is not true and that all accounts are safe.

It then went on to claim these accusations were the work of a smear campaign, and it is offering a whopping $1 million to whoever can prove it.

On top of all that, Houseparty is owned and operated by Epic Games, which is already known for its poor privacy practices. Thankfully, users can easily prevent Houseparty from tracking them so much. The app collects an obscene amount of data by default, but users can still turn location tracking off and make all chat rooms private, effectively neutralizing the issue.

But if you are looking for a good group video chatting app while you are quarantined, and Houseparty’s lack of user privacy still concerns you, there are plenty of other options you can use. Some of which include Hangouts, Zoom, Skype, and more.

How to make a graph in Excel

Microsoft Office Excel Laptop Meeting

Once you’ve wrapped your head around how to manage your data in Excel, you’ll probably find that you want to use it to enhance your presentations. Graphs are a powerful way to flex your creativity while showing off your information. Here are a few tips on how to make a graph in Excel.

The process of creating charts and graphs in Excel isn’t actually too tricky, but when you open the customization menus it can be easy to feel lost. We’ll start below by assuming that you already have all of your data on your sheet.

How to make a graph in Excel

1. Choose the right type of graph for your data. Excel offers nine different options including bar graphs, line graphs, pie graphs, and more. However, not every graph is right for every type of data.

excel graph 1

2. Highlight your data and insert your graph. This is the most important step, as it determines just what will go into your graph. Like many other Excel functions, just highlight your information and make your selection in the Chart section of the Insert tab.

excel graph 2

3. Make sure your data is on the correct axis. Sometimes you’ll find that your data populates on the wrong axis. After all, Excel can’t quite read your mind. To swap the axis, right-click on your graph and choose Select Data. Now click on Switch Row/Column.

4. Now it’s time to play with the design and colors. Click on the Chart Design tab and now you can choose from some preset graph designs. You can also format the legend of your graph by clicking on it.

5. You can also adjust the size of your legend to make it easier to read. To do this, just click on each label or legend and head to the Home tab to adjust the size.

6. Adjust the Y-axis measurement options if needed. You can click on the Y-axis and select Format Axis to change the format to percentages and even manage the number of decimal places.

7. Finally, give your graph a name. Naming your graph is one of the easiest ways to help your audience understand exactly what your graph shows. You want to make sure that it’s specific without being too long and cumbersome.

Now you have a detailed, well-named, and informative graph. You’re one step closer to becoming an Excel expert.

What else should I know?

Once you master charts and graphs, you’ll be able to handle a good chunk of what many people do in Excel every day. However, just a little more training can help you to solidify your skills as a pro. Luckily for you, we’re highlighting a beginner-friendly learning kit that can do just that.

Motorola Edge Plus: Everything we know so far (Update: Name confirmed)

Motorola Edge Plus Evan BlassEvan Blass

Update, March 17, 2020 (3:40AM ET): We’ve updated the original article with new information about the design of the Motorola Edge Plus. Read on to see what the device looks like in leaked renders and images coming from trustworthy sources.

Original article, February 13, 2020 (9PM ET): Motorola hasn’t released a solid premium flagship competitor in several years. Motorola President Sergio Buniac announced in December that that would change in early 2020. We expect this will come in the form of the rumored Motorola Edge Plus.

Unfortunately, the company seems to have done a decent job of keeping leaks at bay, so there isn’t much we know about the device yet. For now, this is everything we expect from Motorola’s upcoming flagship.

Motorola Edge Plus: Name and design

Motorola Edge Plus 3Price Baba

We got our first real glimpse at the Motorola Edge Plus thanks to renders leaked by @OnLeaks and PriceBaba. The first thing you’ll notice in the renders (see image above) is one of 2019’s most polarizing features: a waterfall display.

The renders also show a tiny display cutout for the selfie camera.

On the back of the phone, the renders suggest we’ll see a triple-lens camera array arranged in a vertically-aligned setup. Another set of images leaked by tipster Evan Blass show that there will be a 108MP primary sensor on the standard Motorola Edge smartphone. You can see the images shared by Blass below.

Aside from that, we can also expect Motorola to include some of the other staple premium flagship design features we’ve come to expect from recent devices.

The back of the device does not have a fingerprint sensor, leading us to believe there could be an in-display fingerprint sensor on the phone. There’s also a possibility that the fingerprint reader is integrated with one of the buttons on the side, but that doesn’t look to be the case.

Furthermore, the leaked renders of the Motorola Edge Plus show a headphone jack at the top and a USB-C port at the bottom of the phone.

It was previously thought that the device could come with the “Motorola One 2020” moniker, but it looks more likely that it’s the Motorola Edge Plus instead. In fact, a Bluetooth SIG listing for the phone on March 31 specifically calls it the Motorola Edge Plus too. The name and information in this listing comes from Motorola itself, so it’s safe to say that we’ve got an official name now.

Motorola Edge Plus: Specs and features

Motorola Moto One Hyper back and fingerprint reader

We expect the Motorola Edge Plus to come with a 6.67-inch, 2,340 x 1,080 waterfall display. This display should run to the edges of the device, and it will most likely support a 90Hz display refresh rate. It’s also expected to come with Qualcomm’s latest Snapdragon 865, 8GB or 12GB of RAM, a 5,170mAh battery, a 108MP camera, and Android 10.

A Bluetooth SIG listing at the end of March didn’t reveal much in the way of specs, but it does confirm Bluetooth 5.1 support.

The device should also tout 5G support, and Motorola President Buniac said it would be the “fastest 5G phone on Qualcomm’s flagship platform” with “5G speeds greater than 5Gbps.” Other than that, we are unaware of the rest of the device’s hardware specs.

Motorola could take this opportunity to launch several new applications as well.

Software, on the other hand, is another story. Motorola could take this opportunity to launch several new applications with the phone, including Moto Edge Assistant, Moto Gametime, and Moto Audio.

Moto Edge Assistant will reportedly help users take full advantage of the new curved display. This app should allow them to tweak and customize tap actions on the edges of the screen.

Moto Gametime should introduce a customizable toolbar for users to easily access settings and other tools useful during gaming sessions. Some of these features could include notification blocking, brightness locking, and more. Users should be able to access this toolbar with a tap of a floating button or swipe in from one of the device edges.

Moto Audio should allow the Motorola Edge Plus to tune audio profiles to match specific types of content automatically. It could boost voice clarity during calls or increase the bass while you play music. This would be possible thanks to the various audio profiles for gaming, movies, music, and more.

Motorola Edge Plus: Price and release date

Motorola Moto One Zoom notch and earpiece speaker

We expected Motorola to announce the Motorola Edge Plus on February 23, a day ahead of the official start of Mobile World Congress 2020. Unfortunately, this year’s MWC event was canceled due to concerns surrounding the current coronavirus outbreak.

Motorola could therefore unveil the Edge Plus at any time within the next couple of weeks. We don’t know where the device will be made available, but we hope to see a global rollout with this handset.

In the US, the Motorola Edge Plus will most likely launch on Verizon’s mmWave 5G network. The carrier recently revealed in a press release that it was able to achieve multi-gigabit speeds on Motorola’s upcoming flagship smartphone. The only other information confirmed in the press release is that the phone is powered by the Snapdragon 865 chipset and features the Snapdragon X55 5G modem.

We haven’t heard any rumors on pricing yet either, but we expect this device will fall within premium territory. However, we don’t expect it to come anywhere near the new Galaxy S20 series or even Motorola’s new Razr foldable. It’s more likely that the device will fall somewhere between the $700-$900 price range, though that’s just speculation at this point.

Those are all the details we have on the Motorola Edge Plus so far! Be sure to bookmark this page and check back often as we will update it with new information as we get our hands on it.
