Multi-Device Clip Brings Switchable Lenses To Android Phones – IFA 2018

Olloclip on Thursday announced the Multi-Device Clip, its latest solution designed to improve the mobile photography experience of a wide variety of mobile users, regardless of their (Android) smartphone of choice. The gadget with a self-explanatory name features a traditional clip that can be expanded in order to account for a broad range of lenses and is compatible with both screen protectors and protective cases that are up to 12mm in combined thickness, meaning it should work well with just about any non-rugged accessory and even some rugged ones.

The Multi-Device Clip requires no extra wires or other devices to operate and can be attached to both the front- and rear-facing camera of your smartphone of choice. The gadget is compatible with the company’s existing Connect X lenses that can be easily switched, providing users with a significant versatility boost as they allow them to choose the best option depending on the situation and field of view they want to achieve. Olloclip will start retailing the Multi-Device Clip in mid-September, allowing users to pair it with any one of its Connect X lenses. Such combos will start at $59.99, with extra lenses also being sold separately, starting at $44.99. Olloclip will also be retailing the accessory individually for all consumers who already own some of its lenses, though the price tag that will be attached to the sole gadget has yet to be disclosed.

The company is presently offering half a dozen lenses compatible with its cases that will also work with the newly announced Multi-Device Clip: Macro 7X, Macro 21X, Fisheye and Macro, Telephoto, Ultra-Wide, and Super-Wide. The concept of adding an external lens to a mobile camera isn’t entirely new, though consumer-grade implementations of the thereof remain rare and such technologies are still most commonly used by marketers producing ads that they want to describe as being “shot on” whatever smartphone it is they’re advertising.
