Samsung Outlines Key Tech For ‘Connected Living’ – IFA 2018

Samsung took to the stage at IFA Berlin 2018 to provide an overview highlighting the future of “connected living” and to show how several of its own new products could push progress in that direction. Among those offerings, the company outlined today’s unveiling of technologies in entertainment, including its new Q900R QLED 8K, The Wall, and The Frame televisions series. The Q900R QLED 8K TV, for example, is an A.I.-enhanced television unveiled at IFA that can upscale media content to 8K regardless of the input resolution or source and at a brightness of up to 4,000 nits. Additionally, it includes support for HDR10+ decoding that allows HDR functionality that’s analyzed and controlled on a frame-by-frame basis. All of that is available in formats ranging from 65-inches to 85-inches beginning at the end of September. The Wall is an ultra-thin-bezel television with similar features but incorporating Micro LED technology in a modular design. On the other hand, The Frame is a model of television which utilizes its bezel design to enhance its display, showing famous works of art from over 850 pieces when not in use. A new 49-inch model of The Frame was revealed by Samsung at IFA 2018.

Samsung also showed a wide range of connected home technologies such as its HW-N950 and HW-N850 soundbars, developed in conjunction with the company’s Harman Kardon division. Each supports Dolby Atmos and DTS:X to enable a much more immersive experience than traditional speakers. For home appliances, Samsung’s focus shifts to both A.I. and IoT, starting with the Family Hub fridge before moving onto its Dual Cook Flex oven and Quick Drive washer, revealed earlier this year. The first of those allows consumers to see what’s in their fridge via internal cameras, while also being able to control IoT functions around the home and store grocery lists or look up and plan recipes. That’s all personalized and controlled with Voice ID, Bixby, and a built-in display whether connected products are made by Samsung or not. Dual Cook Flex enables two-zone temperature controls and cooking in a single oven and recipe functions similar to the Family Hub refrigerator while Quick Drive is an A.I.-empowered laundry machine with intelligent schedule and efficiency management systems. Of course, the company couldn’t end its presentation without talking up its new A.I.-enhanced Samsung Galaxy Note 9 flagship phablet, DeX smartphone-to-display docking station, or Galaxy Watch, which were launched in great detail earlier in the year.

Many of the company’s points centered around technologies that aren’t necessarily new but which are growing, such as the IoT and A.I. However, the Korean tech giant also highlighted its own efforts in 5G as being a large part of the basis for all of the incoming advancements. In particular, Samsung points to the recently reported 5G gigabit home broadband access it is currently working to help deliver in the U.S. Those have been conducted alongside new investments in A.I. facilities and the company’s plans to employ as many as 1,000 researchers in that field at the global scale by 2020. Ultimately, its goal is to advance A.I. and IoT interconnectivity over 5G networks so that technology products can serve consumers with increased accuracy and intelligent personal enhancements to their everyday lives.
